Rapist Terrorizes Suburban Connecticut |
|
| |
Less than a year after her retirement as a Connecticut school teacher, a woman we'll call, "Alison" was relaxing on her couch, watching television, when she dozed off. The next thing she remembers is the feeling of a pillow pressed hard against her face.
Alison flailed her arms.
“I won’t hurt you,” a man told her in what the victim interpreted as an Eastern European accent. “I just want your money.”
The woman rose from the couch, following the man’s order to keep the pillow over her face, reaching around the kitchen until she located her purse and handed off some cash. Then, the intruder gripped Alison by the back of her sweater and led her to the bedroom.
“I thought that he was going to lock me in there and run away,” she recalls. “But he followed me in and raped me.”
It was only when Alison contacted authorities that she realized that she was part of a disturbing pattern afflicting the adjoining towns of Manchester and Vernon: a series of sexual assaults linked by the perpetrator’s DNA. |

"He'll Strike Again," Says Rapist's Victim |
|
| |
The four victims range in age from their mid-thirties to early eighties, but police theorize that others remain unreported. The first attack apparently took place in 2001, the most recent in January 2008. Police have since learned about a Peeping Tom in the area, and believe he may be the same man.
Clearly, these were not haphazard assaults. All of the victims were the only capable adults at home at the time of the attacks. According to police, this means that the victims were stalked before they were raped.
Like Alison, a woman we'll call, "Beth" was asleep when the man broke into her home, entering her darkened bedroom in the morning, as her 6-year-old slept in another room. When she tried to rise from the bed, the man pushed her down and repeatedly raped her. He threatened to harm her child if she reported the crime.
In another instance, the attacker issued a warning about hurting a victim’s frail, elderly mother.
Although Manchester residents have since started a Block Watch program, both Alison and Beth moved after the rapes. Police believe that the perpetrator lives in the area, and somebody knows his identity. Either that, or a resident has noted his unusual behavior. They hope that a story on AMW.com will spur someone to talk.
“He’s out there,” Beth says. “He’ll strike again. I feel for everybody.” |
