Cops: Man Shoots Two In Frightening Halloween Attack |
|
| |
For most people, Halloween is a jovial, light-hearted kind of day and an excuse to have a spooky party. Trick-or-treaters go door-to-door seeking sweet candy, hearty laughs and good-nature pranks.
But in the village of Cross Plains, Wisc., October 31, 2008 was anything but typical.
Before the witching hours, authorities received a call from someone hearing shots fired at approximately 2:16 p.m.
When they arrived on the scene, they found that two people had been shot inside of a home; one male victim was dead on arrival, while the other, a female, was desperately clutching to life.
Also in the room, cops found the couple's 1-year-old son.
Oct. 31 was the child's first birthday, and his parents hoped to celebrate his first Halloween later that night.
Near the shot and bloodied victims, cops found the boy's Scooby Doo costume, which he was set to wear when they took him out trick-or-treating.
Cops tell us they think it was a "miracle" that the newborn wasn't hit by any stray bullets in the hail of gunfire due to his proximity to his parents' bodies.
In the hours that followed the horrific crime, officers with the Dane County, Wisc. Sheriff's Office and Cross Plains Police say they learned that the man behind the vicious rampage was Charles Witzel, Jr.
Cops believe that Witzel intended to shoot and kill Craig Severson when he showed up at his apartment.
But U.S. Marshals involved in the massive manhunt for Witzel tell AMW that the other victim, his 27-year-old fiancée Lisa Morgan, may have just been at the wrong place at the wrong time. |

After arriving at a hospital, Lisa told detectives that Witzel showed up at the apartment she shared with Craig Severson, her fiancé. She then went into a nearby room, leaving the two old friends alone to talk.
A short time later, Lisa heard a shouting match erupt between the two men, and she entered the room to see what all the commotion was about.
It was at that time, she told cops, that Witzel pulled a handgun on Craig, firing a bevy of shots in his direction.
According to the criminal complaint, Witzel shot Craig a total of six times, striking him in the heart, liver, kidney, pancreas, spine, and the brain, the last of which is believed to have killed him instantly.
Witzel then allegedly turned the gun on Lisa, striking her in the abdomen, before fleeing the apartment.
Over the course of the investigation, detectives learned that just 24 hours prior to the shooting, Witzel attended a gun show. It was there that Witzel allegedly purchased a handgun, which, according to reports, he shot at a tree stump to perfect his accuracy later that same day.
The day after the Halloween rampage, detectives spoke to Witzel's former girlfriend, and made a shocking discovery: Witzel had been sending her threatening text messages in the days leading up to the shooting.
On October 28, Witzel's ex-girlfriend received a message saying, "The look on u n craig's face is gona b priceless!"
The night before the shootings, Witzel angrily asked her why she cheated on him with Craig Severson while she and Witzel were still a pair.
Witzel concluded the message with a desperate plea for her to respond.
The texts went unanswered, and less than 24 hours later, cops believe Witzel finally snapped. |

Marshals Looking Nationwide For Alleged Murderer |
|
| |
Witzel is no stranger to law enforcement.
A Deputy U.S. Marshal involved in the manhunt tells AMW that Witzel has a long history of arrests, ranging from burglary and DWI, to assault with the intent to cause harm, and even aiming a pistol at another person in 2000.
Some of those charges were thrown out, others had been pled down to lesser crimes, while a few ultimately led to prison time.
In addition to Witzel's alleged crimes which preceded the incidents of Halloween 2008, Witzel is known to have a variety of distinguishing features that the Marshals hope will help bring in tips on his whereabouts.
Witzel loves Great Danes, and has a tattoo of one on his upper left arm. He also has another tattoo of a cat on his right forearm.
The Marshals have also learned that Witzel has a penchant for strip clubs, and they say he appears to enjoy most anything that's sexual in nature.
The last verified sighting of Witzel was in O'Fallon, Mo., where he stopped for an oil change on Saturday, November 1, 2008. The Marshals have learned that during this stop, he used the name "Larry Potter."
Witzel is believed to be driving a silver 1992 Toyota pickup truck with Wisconsin license plate EV4861. He could be anywhere in the United States.
