  Case Story
Armed Robbery Duo Escape From Georgia Prison
On Oct. 13, 2008, cops say Michael A. Tweedle and Johnny Mack Brown escaped from Hays State Prison in Trion, Ga. Tweedle was serving two ten-year sentences for armed robbery. Brown was serving a life sentence for armed robbery, hijacking a motor vehicle and aggravated battery and assault. According to police, the men climbed through a fence during a recreation period, and officers launched a land and air search that involved more than 65 cops and canine units. Department of Corrections officials said the prison's perimeter detection system functioned properly, but also took steps to prevent future escapes. In the days following the escape, police dogs found tracks, and police say they believed Brown and Tweedle were still in the area surrounding the prison. But, cops say, the two are still on the run. On Oct. 21, 2008 authorities announced that the search would expand to include a larger area and involve state and federal law enforcement agencies throughout the Southeast.

  Cops: Escapee Kidnaps Georgia Woman
Brown was spotted on Monday, Oct. 20, 2008 when police say he abducted a Chattooga County, Ga. woman from her home at knife-point. Cops say Brown went into the woman's home while she was away and waited for her to return. Brown then forced the woman to drive him to Franklin County, Ga., where police say she dropped him off at a local church just north of Lavonia, Ga. Cops say Brown was picked up by someone in a dark colored compact car. The woman was unharmed, according to police. Brown is known to have family connections in the Franklin County area, according to police. Cops say Brown was last seen wearing a red pullover shirt, gray sweat pants or gym pants and a brown and gray winter overcoat. Police say Brown may be armed with a single blade kitchen knife, and they are certain he is no longer in the Chattooga County area. On Oct. 21, 2008 authorities announced that the search would expand to include a larger area and involve state and federal law enforcement agencies throughout the Southeast.   Not Brown's First Escape
Cops say Brown was serving a life sentence for armed robbery, hijacking a motor vehicle, theft by taking and aggravated battery and assault when police say he robbed an armored car. The armored car was parked in the Perimeter Square shopping center in Athens, Ga. when Brown shot the guard three times and stole $183,000 in cash and checks, according to police. An off-duty police officer happened to be in the area and exchanged fire with Brown, according to Capt. Clarence Holeman of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. Cops say Brown then hijacked a car from someone in the parking lot and fled. He was arrested a few minutes later at a mall across the street where, police say, he was surrounded. But cops hadn't seen the last of Brown. Brown began serving his life sentence at the Clarke County Jail, but cops say he escaped on Sept. 13, 1998 when he scaled a barbed wire fence during an exercise period. Police say Brown fled to South Carolina where he carjacked and beat and 85-year-old man. He then returned to North Carolina, where cops say he ditched the car and stole another car from a dealership. Police say they arrested Brown three weeks later in Daytona Beach, Fla., where they found him asleep in the stolen car. Brown escaped with another inmate who was apprehended by Clarke County Police, according to authorities; Brown was traveling alone. Cops say Brown began his incarceration at Hays State prison on Feb. 11, 1999.
