  Case Story
  W. Va. Dad Faces 18 Counts Of Child Sexual Abuse
U.S. Marshals in West Virginia have a fugitive on their rolls who they say has admitted to fleeing from sexual abuse charges, and they suspect he will do anything he can to remain in hiding. Deputies say 39-year-old Kenneth Mikolon was arrested in September 2007 on charges that he had been sexually abusing a Grafton, W.Va. teenager since she was young girl. In total, Mikolon faces 18 counts of sexual abuse. As Mikolon's trial loomed, it seemed the victim's pain and hurt from the alleged abuse would finally begin to heal. But on October 8, 2008, Marshals say Mikolon failed to appear for his court date. Instead, cops say the accused child sexual abuser left a trail of evidence -- including a letter to his family -- that he had no plans to ever answer to his charges.

  "A Letter To Say Farewell"
Mikolon's letter explained his intentions of going into hiding. "This is not a suicide note, it is a letter to say farewell," he wrote. "I am going for a ride and as of yet do not know where I am headed." In the letter, Mikolon said he could not imagine "spending a minute in jail for a crime I did not commit" and explains his decision for going on the run by saying it was a message from God. "I was praying and in emotional turmoil when I asked God to give me a sign. To my surprise I opened my Bible to Ezekiel 12:1-16 which talks of Ezekiel packing and going into exile." But deputies say Mikolon did something else before fleeing -- something they say indicates he isn't prepared to come back any time soon.

  Cops: Fugitive Ready To Run
While serving a search warrant at his home, deputies discovered that Mikolon had purchased several thousand dollars worth of intense camping equipment, including a disposable body stapler to close up wounds, a holographic weapon sight, inflatable sleeping bags, a tent, first aid kits, and a body hammock. They say Mikolon is a skilled camper and outdoorsman who will be able to survive alone in the wilderness. Family members told deputies that they've all camped in North Carolina, Maine, and Michigan -- but that Mikolon loved Maine and vacationed there as recently as 2006. Deputies say he is very familiar with trails in those areas and is likely planning on camping in remote areas and state parks in order to stay on the run. Deputies say he was last known to be driving a 2007 dark green Ford F150 pickup truck with a wildlife W. Va. wild tag WL13787. Mikolon Spotted In Northern Michigan It seems U.S. Marshals were spot-on with their hunch that Mikolon would flee to desolate areas and focus on state parks for his hiding grounds. An all-out search is on for Mikolon in northern Michigan, where a clerk at a convenience store and gas station in Houghton County spotted the fugitive, his dog, and his truck on October 22, 2008. Authorities there believe the woman's sighting is credible because she described Mikolon's truck accurately, even pointing out a new detail that hadn't been previously released: Mikolon's chrome license plate frame. According to police, the clerk made the connection to Mikolon and his canine companion from a wanted poster that had been posted across the street from the convenience store at a state park. Cops say the poster was part of a state-wide alert for Mikolon, issued after learning the fugitive was likely to flee to their area and camp out in state parks. Police say someone from the state park brought the poster over to the convenience store, and when the clerk took a look, she realized a man matching the description had been in the store. Since the spotting, numerous agencies around the area have teamed up to fish Mikolon out of his hiding spot. Search parties scoured by air and foot for the fugitive, but so far have not turned up any sign of Mikolon. Cops say they're anxious to find him if he's still there because of Mikolon's dangerous tendencies. Some of Mikolon's family members in W.Va. have told deputies that Mikolon is extremely controlling and manipulative. Deputies say he served 12 years in the United States Army before being released on disability for a bad back. Deputies say he frequents Veteran's Administration Hospitals and takes several prescription medications. He is believed to be armed.
