Career Criminal Now Accused Of More Than Malpractice |
|
| |
Hardly a day goes by when Americans aren't plagued by more bad economic news, and many are struggling to make ends meet. When Lindsey Baggett's husband lost his job, Lindsey felt obligated to sell her engagement ring on Craigslist.
One potential buyer, "Dr. Spencer Cole," expressed serious interest in Lindsey’s offer. Late one night, Dr. Cole sent Lindsey a voicemail message about her ad. In his call, he mentioned working around his busy schedule in order to arrange a face-to-face meeting.
Lindsey arranged to meet Dr. Cole at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas on March 24, 2008. He requested that Lindsey bring the ring along for him to examine.
Dr. Cole arrived in his scrubs. He was pressed for time, so the meeting was brief, and the two planned to discuss the final transaction.
At that time, Dr. Cole mentioned meeting with his broker before making any hasty decisions about such a large purchase.
On March 26 -- two days after their initial meeting -- the pair met to finalize the transaction. Once again, Dr. Cole scheduled the meeting in the hospital.
Dr. Cole was dressed to the nines when Lindsey met him in a hospital conference room to make the exchange.
Dr. Cole presented her with a a check, issued by Merrill Lynch, for $11,500 and Lindsey presented her 2.5 carat ring -- valued at more than $20,000.
Meanwhile, Lindsey waited out the three-day hold before the check could clear. She said she was anxious, and after three days with no news from the bank, Lindsey’s anxiousness transformed into skepticism.
Soon, she realized the worst: the check may have been counterfeit. |

No End In Sight For Lamberti's Alleged Crimes |
|
| |
Fort Worth Police confirmed Lindsey’s suspicions: the check was, in fact, a counterfeit.
Moreover, after examining hospital surveillance tapes, authorities came to an even more shocking discovery: Dr. Spencer Cole is not a doctor at all.
Scouring through recent crime reports in the surrounding area, the police came to a daunting realization, that Dr. Spencer Cole is a career con man, whose real name is Michael Ralph Lamberti, a long-time criminal who has been convicted of a laundry list of serious and petty crimes in his career.
Cops say Lamberti relies on sharp wit, a charismatic attitude and suave lingo to win the trust of unsuspecting women.
Detectives investigating Michael Lamberti's alleged one-man crime spree found a series of similar hospital cons.
According to authorities, just minutes after the Lindsey Baggett con went down in Fort Worth, Lamberti headed to Dallas Presbyterian Hospital where he pulled an identical con on yet another woman.
Once again, security tapes show Lamberti walking through the hospital corridors, passing real doctors and security guards, carrying an air of confidence -- some have called it arrogance -- about him as he proceeded, unhindered, into conference rooms and offices.
Cops say Lamberti is a master of his shady craft, and until he is caught, dozens of more people could be conned. |

Different Day, Different Con |
|

Although Lamberti's most infamous scheme involves his role as a "doctor," he does not limit himself solely to this elaborate hospital con. It seems Lamberti has a wide array of cons he uses where ever he see's potential opportunity.
Before proceeding with his schemes, Lamberti strives to establish some sort of trust between himself and his victim.
In Seattle, for example, cops say Lamberti posed as a famous Broadway star in order to convince hotel employees he was not only trustworthy, but also a national icon.
According to authorities, once obtaining a certain degree of trust, Lamberti was able to swindle thousands of dollars from the hotel by cashing counterfeit checks, booking an extremely expensive room and racking up serious room service charges.
Again, Lamberti seeks any opportunity he thinks might be prosperous. In the past, police say Lamberti has frequented gay bars, clubs and hangouts as a source for potential victims.
Once again, after fostering a sense of trust between himself and his victim, Lamberti goes to work implementing his devious plans. He is patient. Moreover, his schemes are elaborate and well thoughtout and always check out. An air of confidence allows him to proceed undetected, even within tightly knit communities.
