My Story By Nicole Cully |
|
| |
I am really fighting to find the person that did this to my husband and I did not know where else to turn. Please help my family, please help us find justice.
My husband’s name is Charles Cully, Jr. and he was 29 years old. We lived together in Annapolis, MD where we were raising my two daughters. CJ, (which we referred to him as), was a quiet man, he never raised his voice to anyone and had no enemies. He was a hard worker. He worked for ‘Labor Ready’, a staffing agency also located in Annapolis. He was well loved in the community. There isn’t a person that knows him that would say that he was mean, rude or uncaring. He was a loving family man and a good friend.
On January 18, 2008 at about 4:45 am he gave me a kiss and said he was leaving to go to Labor Ready to find out if there was any work for him that day. We exchanged ‘I love you’s’ and he left. At about 7:30 am he called as he did each morning to make sure that we were up and getting ready for the day. At that time he told me that they did not have a job for him that day. I assured him that everything would be okay, that I loved him and that I would talk to him later. While at work I decided to text him at around 10 am to say that I loved him. I did not receive a response so I assumed that he was at home because he often did not get texts or cell phone calls when he was inside of the house. At about 11 am I received several calls on my cell phone but I was not able to answer right away because I was in conference with the owners of the store that I manage. Shortly after they left the store, my phone rang again and I was able to answer it and it was my brother telling me that he had just received a call saying that CJ had been shot at a friend’s house up the street from ours in the same apartment complex. I, of course, immediately left work to go to the neighborhood and the whole time kept thinking and hoping that it was a mistake.
Cops say that on January 18, 2008 at 10:54 a.m., a citizen went to visit her friend at Cecelia Brown’s residence. Upon arrival, the citizen found the door to the apartment open. She entered the apartment to check on her friend and found two people lying on the floor with blood around them. The victims did not appear to be conscious, so the citizen left the apartment and called 911.
When I got to the neighborhood, I went to a group of people standing around and asked questions, but they stated the police were not talking yet. I went up to one of the officers on the scene to tell him that I thought that my husband may be in there and he wanted to know why I thought that and I let him know that I had received several calls. The police officers asked me to walk with them into the community center where they had me sit and wait until the detective had time to come in and talk to me. They then had me write a statement about the events of his day that I knew of. Eventually it was confirmed that it indeed was my husband, CJ that had been killed, along with the tenant of the apartment, a close, card playing friend Cecelia Brown that morning.
When the oficers and paramedics arrived at the scene, they determined the two victims were deceased. The victims were identified as Cecelia Brown, age 50, and Charles Cully, Jr., age 29. The Annapolis PD determined the cause of death for both victims was by gunshot and they are currently investigating this case as a double homicide.
It has been just over a month now since that horrible, crazy day and Annapolis Police Department still does not have a suspect in custody. It was the first homicide (a double) in Annapolis in 2008. I have been so scared to go home alone or even walk around the neighborhood alone since this whole thing happened. I am afraid for my safety and the safety of my children because I don’t know who did this or why. The children ask me on a regular basis if the police have found out who did this to daddy and I have to tell them no. |
