  Case Story
Cops: Mercer Is The Last Of The "Mob"
FBI agents are hunting for a 34-year-old who they say is a drug trafficker linked to the 4th Street Mob, a violent Southeast Washington, D.C. gang. The FBI says the 4th Street Mob wasn't just a well-oiled, money-making machine, it was a family business. Authorities say Frederick Mercer joined his cousins in the family drug business and rose through the ranks of one of D.C.' s last, most violent street crews, to become a mid-level drug trafficker and enforcer. Cops say Mercer distributed large quantities of powder and crack cocaine to street-level drug dealers and wasn't afraid to get involved in what cops call "hand-to-hand" drug transactions with the crew's customers. Cops say Mercer didn't just distribute the drugs; it was Mercer's job to hold things down. With his crews staking out a claim on Southeast D.C.'s Fourth Street SE, the mob -- as they called themselves -- roamed the streets, selling their poison and defending the crew's territory through intimidation and violence.

FBI: Funny, Charming, And Vicious As A Serpent
Agents say Mercer is a funny and charming guy who kept a cool and relaxed relationship with his drug runners. While other crews ruled with an iron fist, they say Mercer exercised restraint and grace. Cops say Mercer was liked and well-respected by those in the netherworld, where reputation and respect reign supreme. But cops say Mercer is no pushover. One agent says Mercer will "do what he needs to do to maintain control of the street and his territory." Cops say when a man accused Mercer of being a snitch, he didn't just smile and laugh it off -- cops say Mercer answered the man's accusations by carving his answer into the man's chest.

Agents: Mercer's The Last Man Standing
Cops say after several raids and arrests on the 4th Street Mob and its crew, Mercer is the last man standing. The FBI dealt a serious blow to the "family business" when it arrested 21 people in connection with the drug trafficking, which extended from D.C. to Maryland and Virginia. Agents are now focusing their full attention on one final suspect, Frederick Mercer. Cops say every time Mercer has been arrested, there has been a foot chase, and it is clear that Mercer has no intention of going back to jail. Agents say Mercer has an extensive criminal record and is known to carry weapons. Authorities consider Mercer armed and extremely dangerous, and agents believe Mercer may be hiding out near Clinton, N.C. If you or anyone you know has information on the whereabouts of Frederick Mercer, please call 1-800-CRIME-TV today. -- by Denni Michael Wagner, AMW Staff
