Pennsylvania Troopers Search for Drug Trafficker |
|
| |
Cops say on Jan. 24, 2008, a Pennsylvania Trooper stationed along Highway 81 in Cumberland County, Pa. was monitoring north-bound traffic when noticed a blue tractor truck.
The trooper would have paid little attention to the truck had it displayed all the necessary markings, but the truck was glaringly out of place and lacking all visible signs of legality.
Suspicious, the trooper began to follow the truck, eventually pulling the vehicle over.
As the trooper made his way along the passenger side of the truck, he noticed that the fifth wheel of the vehicle appeared to be new and not recently used. He also noted the missing license plate.
When the trooper requested the driver's license, medical card and log book, the man claimed he had forgotten the items at a friend's house.
Under questioning, the man admitted his name was Johnny Lee Smith, Jr.
When the trooper instructed Smith to write his personal information down on a slip of paper, including his birth date, Smith complied. But when the trooper asked him how old he was, Smith lied.
The trooper called in Smith's information, and learned Smith had been previously arrested for transporting marijuana. The trooper knew immediately what needed to happen and called in a K-9 unit.
When the trooper asked Smith if he would consent to a search of the truck, Smith hesitated. Smith's hands began to shake and beads of sweat began forming on his forehead despite the 30-degree weather.
Cops say Smith finally consented to an exterior search of the truck.
A K-9 officer released a trained narcotics dog named Nemo. According to the police, Nemo alerted officers to drugs in the truck by sitting on the driver's side. The troopers realized it was time to secure their suspect.
But cops say as one of the troopers began to place Smith in handcuffs, Smith started to resist and the fight was on.
Cops say Smith thrashed and flailed until he twisted out of the trooper's grasp, tearing his own shirt in the tussle. Not wanting to take any chances, the trooper pushed the emergency button on his radio and called for backup.
The trooper then drew his gun and ordered Smith to the ground. Instead, cops say Smith sized up his chances and dashed across four lanes of highway traffic, dodging speeding cars on his flight from the officers.
A Close Encounter
Undaunted by Smith's daring getaway, police mobilized units that flooded the surrounding areas.
While police canvassed the area near the location where Smith had disappeared, they were approached by a woman who had encountered Smith.
According to the woman, a man fitting Smith's description had entered the restaurant where she worked, asking her to move her car so that he could make a delivery.
Cops say the woman, who happened to be waiting for a delivery, did more than move her car. She handed Smith her car keys so he could reposition it.
Cops say instead of moving her car, Smith took off in it and hasn't been seen since. |

Cops Seeking Accused Serial Drug Runner Johnny Lee Smith, Jr. |
|
| |
With Smith in the wind, troopers turned their focus back to the truck Smith had been driving.
Police obtained and executed a search warrant on the truck, where they found several large suitcases filled with bales of marijuana. In total, police found 200 lbs. of marijuana in Smith's truck.
Police also learned that this wasn't Smith's first brush with the law. Police say in December 2007, Smith was arrested when cops found 100 pounds of marijuana in the sleeper truck he was driving.
In that case, authorities say Smith posted bond and was released on $100,000 bail. But cops say Smith obviously hadn't learned his lesson, because less than a month later, he was stopped by Pennsylvania Troopers doing the same thing. |

Cops: Who Is The Real Johnny Lee Smith, Jr.? |
|
| |
Cops say Johnny Lee Smith, Jr. is a U.S. Army veteran, honorably discharged in 2003. They learned that Smith had worked as a truck driver in California, but had no additional information on his other employment.
Cops say Smith considers himself a playboy -- with a wide grin and soft smiling eyes, women loved him, and he knew it.
Investigators say Smith likes to meet women in chat rooms and often uses the screen name 67NSEXY or some variation thereof.
In addition, detectives say Smith likes to spin tales of his adventures in the military in order to impress women. But while Smith boasts of having served in Iraq, police say they haven't been able to confirm his story.
Investigators say Smith will be easy to pick out of the crowd: he stands 6’7” tall.
Police believe that Smith may still be driving trucks, and say he could be using the names Chris or Mack.
Cops say Smith is originally from Texas, and has ties to Arizona.
