Mushroom Hunter Makes Surprise Discovery |
|
| |
Mushroom hunting is more than just a hobby. For many in the Midwest, it's a way of life. Throughout the spring and summer seasons, mushrooms pop up throughout heavily wooded areas, enticing amateur and expert hunters alike to come out of the proverbial woodwork in search of the perfect fungus.
In late April, 2008, a mushroom hunter in Johnson County, Indiana, made a shocking discovery. In his fungal quest, he came upon some tattered clothes in the middle of the woods. He then followed the fabric fragments to a nearby hole in the ground and noticed what he thought may have been a human skull.
When investigators arrived, that's exactly what they found. A skull, a leg bone, and some other partial bone fragments were scattered in and around a caved-in, makeshift gravesite. |

Gravesite, Body Yield Numerous Clues |
|
| |
Upon further investigation, cops in Johnson County determined that the body had been murdered. At the scene, they found a slew of clues that they thought would aide them in learning the victim's identity. But as fate would have it, the case wouldn't prove to be so easy.
Approximately 10-15 feet away from the crude grave, which an earthquake may have shaken open, investigators with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office found a passport, a voter registration card, and a driver's license -- all from Mexico and all containing the same name: Hugo Garcia Nungaray.
The initial investigation determined that the documents appear to be legitimate. However, the listed addresses and the name 'Hugo Garcia Nungaray' not only may be fake, but cops are not even sure if the IDs belonged to the victim.
Due to the skeleton's bone structure, however, they believe the pictures on the IDs may actually be those of their victim.
On one of the documents, Norma Garcia Nungaray is listed as an emergency contact and cops believe that name to be the sister of the individual pictured on the ID. Unfortunately, they've yet to track her down, either. |

Nature Takes Its Course On Unknown Victim's Body |
|
| |
Now, cops need your help in not only identifying this nameless victim, but they also need your assistance in finding those responsible for his death.
The investigation has yielded some information about the man, but not enough to develop many substantial leads.
Their investigation has led them to believe that the man was killed sometime in the spring or summer of 2007 -- about a year before the mushroom hunter discovered his body. In the time since the man's death, animals had scavenged the area, tearing his clothes -- and his body -- completely apart. All around the burial site, cops found pieces of tattered clothes, as well as parts of his ribs, arms, and a few of his fingers.
At the time of his death, cops say the victim had been fairly well-dressed. On the skeleton, cops found what they believe to be blue Gap-brand jeans with a size-38 waist, 34" long. Nearby, they also found expensive, black Alfini shoes, size 9-1/2, as well as pieces of a black Liz Claiborne jacket which they believe may have been a peacoat.
When cops unearthed the man's skull from the ground, they realized that he had received good dental care in the past, as evidenced by the extensive work done on his still-intact teeth.
The skull was found with four silver fillings in his mouth -- two on the upper right side and two on the lower left. He had two porcelain crowns, six missing teeth, and at least seven teeth which received resin restoration to match the colors. Also, covering one of his missing teeth was a dental bridge, which contained two gold restorations in the rear upper left side of his mouth.
Cops believe the man was either White or Hispanic, approximately 5'9" tall and had an average build. At some point in the past, they believe his nose may have been broken and subsequently healed.
