  Case Story
Convicted Felon Sought in Pittsburgh Homicide
Pennsylvania police are searching for a suspect who fatally shot a bar patron in the early hours of March 30, 2008. Police say Dane Antoine Brooks, 39, was working security at Mac Can Do's Bar when John Allen, 22, showed up with some friends. Police say Brooks and Allen exchanged words when Allen was denied entrance to the establishment. What happened next was inexplicable, police say. During the heated exchange, detectives say Brooks opened fire, sending bar patrons running for cover. When police arrived on the scene, they found Allen on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. Allen was ferried to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

  A Bar Room Assassination
Earlier in the evening, police say John Allen left a relative's birthday party, then headed over to Mac Can Do's, where he arrived around 1:30 a.m. Brooks, who authorities say was acting as a bouncer at the bar that evening, was using his flashlight to check identification and a hand-held metal-detecting wand to screen patrons for weapons. As he checked incoming patrons, police say Allen showed up with some friends. Allen's friends easily made their way into the club. Cops say while one of Allen's female friends lingered in the foyer talking on her cell phone, Allen moved forward in line, where he came face to face with Dane Brooks. Cops say Brooks recognized Allen as a problem patron who had been barred from the establishment. According to police, the two men exchanged words. What nobody knew was that along with the flashlight and wand, Brooks was packing a gun. Witnesses said before they knew it Brooks had produced a gun and shot Allen at point blank range, hitting him in the neck. As Allen crumbled to the ground, cops say Allen's female acquaintance found herself hurtling forward as Brooks knocked past her, fleeing the bar. Cops say Brooks hasn't been seen since.

  Convicted Felon's Checkered Past
Investigators say Brooks is a convicted felon who has a lengthy criminal history, dating back to 1989. According to police records, Brooks' criminal charges include drug possession, receiving stolen property, driving with a suspended license, carrying a firearm without a license and aggravated assault. In addition to the warrant for his arrest in the murder of John Allen, cops say Brooks is wanted on several outstanding warrants issued through the Allegheny County Family Division. Police say they are anxious to find Brooks because as a convicted felon, Brooks is prohibited from possessing firearms. He has shown little regard for the health and safety of anyone in his immediate vicinity, which is why police say it is even more important to get him off the streets. Police believe Brooks may have fled to Florida or Altanta, Ga., and may be selling drugs to support himself. He is a motorcycle enthusiast and may seek out black motorcycle clubs. Brooks is described as a black male, about 6'1" tall, weighing approximately 180 lbs. He has black hair and brown eyes. Police consider Brooks armed and dangerous. Murder Suspect Captured in New Jersey Cops say after almost nine months on the run, Dane A. Brooks was captured in Newark, N.J. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008. Brooks is accused of gunning down 22-year-old John Allen at Mac Can Do's Bar in Pittsburgh, Pa. On March 30, 2008, police say Brooks was working security at the bar when Allen arrived. The men exchanged words before Brooks pulled out a gun and shot Allen in the neck. Police originally believed that Brooks had traveled to Florida or Georgia to evade capture. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Dane reportedly went to New Jersey with a friend and was nabbed by police.                     -- by Denni Michael Wagner, AMW Staff
