  Case Story
Utah Police: Father Wanted For Abusing 1-Year-Old Son
"It was so tough. I thought my son would never make it," said Genoria Marsalis of her 1-year-old son's chances of surviving third degree burns over more than 50 percent of his body.  Cops in Taylorsville, Utah began the hunt for the baby's father, 35-year-old Eric Isoen Jones, who is accused of child abuse. On Nov. 6, 2006, Jones had arrived, by chance, at Genoria's house when she and her mother were leaving for a water aerobics class.  Genoria didn't think twice about Jones' offer to babysit her kids, including their 1-year-old son. Genoria tells AMW that when she and her mother returned after class, Jones and the baby were not at home. According to Genoria, Jones arrived with the baby moments later and immediately put him inside the playpen. Jones told Genoria that he and the baby were at a nearby park, then proceeded to watch television.  "He was flipping channels, acting that everything was OK," she said. Genoria had an inkling that something was terribly wrong because each time she went to check on her baby, she said, Jones stopped her. It wasn't until after Jones left several hours later, that Genoria made a grisly discovery.

Doctors Suspect Baby Was Immersed In Scalding Hot Liquids
"I went to change my baby," Genoria said. As she undressed him, Genoria saw that the baby's skin was sticking to its clothes: the baby had severe burns on half of his body. Genoria and her mother rushed the baby to a nearby clinic, but he was quickly flown to University Hospital for specialized treatment at their burn unit.  According to Genoria, the baby remained in critical condition for several months and was hospitalized for nearly a year. The baby faces several follow-up surgeries and suffers permanent disabilities as a result of the burns; doctors told Genoria that the baby was likely immersed in scalding hot liquids. Police then issued a warrant for Jones' arrest, charging him with child abuse. "This man almost killed my baby, but by the grace of God, he lived," she said.  "We got to get this trash off the street." On Sept. 10, 2008, Hawaiian police officers and U.S. Marshals arrested Eric Jones at an Oahu hotel.  -- By Roger J. Chiang, AMW Staff
