  Case Story
"Heavy D Bandit" Striking Again & Again -- On Mondays & Fridays -- In And Around Detroit
FBI agents in Detroit are trying to identify a prolific bank robber terrorizing their community. The bandit earned the nickname the Heavy D Bank Robber from agents because of his heavy-set appearance and his habit of wearing Detroit Tigers baseball caps that have an old English "D" on them.  Cops say he has hit at least twelve times since May 23, 2008. At each heist, eyewitnesses tell cops there is nothing about his appearance that stands out.  In fact, Detroit Tigers baseball caps are fairly common in the summer months in Motown. Typically, "Heavy D" enters the bank with little fanfare, walks up to the bank teller and makes smalltalk.  During the conversation, he slips the teller a note announcing the robbery. In some cases, agents say the robber leaves with no money at all when the teller says there is none to give.

  Many Motown-Area Banks Hit
Still, federal investigators say the Heavy D Bank Robber keeps coming back for more money and he has never struck the same bank twice. So far, agents have tied the Heavy D Bandit to a dozen different heists from May of 2008 thru July.  They say he has struck in Detroit, as well as Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, West Bloomfield, Livonia, Redford and Dearborn. They say in each one, he follows the same "MO."  They have also been able to link him visually from surveillance images caught on camera. Agents say the bold bandit does little to disguise his true identity.  Other than the baseball caps, the Heavy D Bandit typically wears loose fitting shirts or a quilted coat and wire-rimmed glasses and carries a day planner or portfolio with him in each robbery. Now, federal agents tell AMW another clue about Heavy D:  he typically strikes on Mondays and Fridays.  While a couple of the robberies occurred on Tuesdays, agents say Heavy D is in his comfort zone in and around Detroit before or after weekends.  This could be a major clue about who Heavy D is and why he is available on Mondays and Fridays to commit these robberies.  It could be that he has a job on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; he could have a job or a reason to come to Detroit on the weekends from somewhere else.  In any event, FBI agents hope that AMW viewers will use the clue to help them identify their prolific robber.

Does The Heavy D Bandit Have An Accomplice?
Authorities investigating the Heavy D robberies say that he may have an accomplice or "partner" in his crimes. That's because two other robberies have been tied to a second suspect with similar MOs.  Like the Heavy D Bandit, this suspect also wears Tigers baseball caps and passes notes to the tellers to announce his robberies.  He is heavy-set and on one occasion even wore wire-rimmed glasses. But agents say this is another man altogether.  He has been caught on tape in two different robberies in Lathrup Village and Royal Oak. The second suspect carries a black nylon laptop case and on one occasion revealed a handgun in his waist band. Agents want to identify both of these suspects.  They fear the duo could become more aggressive and hurt someone if they continue to be successful with their heists.
