  Case Story
  Mass. Fugitive Makes Daring Escape
The Salem Witch Museum commemorates the detention of 180 citizens accused of witchcraft more than 300 years ago. But there's nothing otherworldly about the charges filed against Miguel Angel Caraballo, local police said, after finding a vehicle he allegedly used to flee justice on a small street adjoining the tourist attraction. The 37-year-old Caraballo was wearing leg shackles and handcuffs when he was escorted -- with ten other prisoners -- toward Salem Superior Court at around 8:20 a.m. on June 25, 2008 and both restraints were connected to a chain looping around his stomach.  But according to police, he managed to "shuffle away" from Essex County Sheriff's deputies and into a stolen 1998 Nissan Maxima, driven by a female friend. Authorities describe the alleged accomplice as a Hispanic woman with long, dark hair. They say the vehicle had been stolen in Lynn, Mass. the day before. It was recovered about an hour after the escape on Kimball Court, the small street next to the Salem Witch Museum, less than a half-mile from the courthouse.  The shackles were also allegedly found inside the car.

A Long Rap Sheet For Mass. Escapee
Police warn that Caraballo has a lengthy criminal record, and should be considered extremely dangerous.  Prior to his last arrest, he allegedly proclaimed that he'd shoot it out with the cops rather than return to the clink. Caraballo was about to attend a pre-trial conference related to his April 16, 2008 arrest on charges that included kidnapping, home invasion, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, larceny of a motor vehicle and larceny over $250, stemming from a December 21, 2007 incident. Police claim that Caraballo and two other men raided a Haverhill, Mass. home, tying up and pistol-whipping a guest while demanding the combination of a safe. When Caraballo discovered that the safe was not inside the home, authorities say, the invaders stole the home owner's Mercedes, and drove it to Plaistow, N.H., where it was recovered several days later. At the time of the home invasion, police say Caraballo was facing federal charges over violating the conditions of his release, following a federal conviction of conspiracy to transport stolen property over state lines.
