  Case Story
Bank Robbers Making Tracks Across State Lines
Spotsylvania, Va. police say three black males and possibly one black female using several banks in multiple jurisdictions as their own personal ATMs. Investigators say that a crew of robbers dubbed the Interstate Bandits are targeting several banks in Va., Tenn. and N.C. Police say it began on May 8, 2008 at a PNC Bank in Spotsylvania. According to authorities, one suspect stood at the front door while his partner -- a deposit slip in hand -- approached a bank teller. The man whispered his orders, demanding all the cash from the drawer. In a process police say took about a minute, the two robbers stuffed the cash in bags and then fled the bank on foot.

Cops: Interstate Bank Robbers Change M.O.
At the beginning of their crime spree, cops say one suspect would enter the bank and commit the robbery while the other stood at the front door. But by the third heist, cops say that both suspects would enter the bank and demand the money from tellers.  Cops say while the thieves don't brandish any weapons or firearms, police say that they are absolutely dangerous. Investigators note that the suspects have refined their routine and are not afraid to get up-close and personal. Investigators say the suspects have dropped the guise of pretending to be bank customers. Instead of making demands or passing notes, they are taking up positions behind the counter and cleaning out the bank drawers themselves. Police fear this escalation in their behavior could lead to a violent encounter down the line. Investigators believe that the men are highly organized. According to authorities, they are not only targeting the banks, but they are also doing counter-surveillance in and around the targeted areas before they make their move. Cops believe that they are also hitting targets near major highways -- using the interstate to make their getaway. Authorities say this shows a high-level of sophistication in planning and execution. But cops say these suspects are also sloppy. The men aren't wearing masks and haven't made any attempt to hide their identities. They have also introduced a new element into the mix: an attractive woman. Cops say on June 10, 2008, a black female appeared on surveillance footage 45 minutes before the team's heist on an Alabama bank in East Hoover. Police believe this woman is being sent in before the bank robberies to assess the bank's security or lack thereof.  Cops describe the woman as wearing a light green tank top and a bracelet on her left wrist.

Cops Map A Trail of Terror
Cops have composed a map that tracks the banks and cities in which the robberies have occurred. The suspects began their bank heists in Spotsylvania, Va. hitting a PNC bank at 10:49 a.m. on May 8, 2008. Police now say the suspects also hit a Sun Trust Bank in Raleigh, N.C. on May 15 and introduced a third suspect into their heist -- a black male with gold teeth, who implied that he had a weapon. Thirteen days later, cops say the suspects struck for a third time, holding-up a Sun Trust Bank in Huntersville, N.C. on May 28, 2008. Cops say in this robbery, Malik Dillard made a solo appearance. Police also say no vehicle was seen in the area, but surveillance footage places Dillard at a nearby bus stop. The suspects resurfaced again, targeting a third Sun Trust Bank in Chattanooga, Tenn. Cops say in that June 3, 2008 robbery, the Dillard and Sanders entered the bank, waited in line, and announced they were robbing the bank. The suspects hit again on June 6, 2008, at a fourth Sun Trust bank in Cary, N.C. Four days later, on June 10, the pair robbed an M&F Bank in East Hoover, Ala. and showed up with what appeared to police to be at the time a third unknown accomplice, a young black female. On June 13, cops say that the men struck again, robbing a Sun Trust Bank in Richmond, Va. and making off with $30,000 in cash. On June 24, 2008, cops say that Dillard and Sanders vaulted over the counters of a Concord, N.C. bank and forced tellers to open the cash drawers. On July 3, 2008, cops say that the bandits hit the First Citizens Bank in Raleigh, N.C. Seven days later, on July 10, 2008, the suspects robbed two banks in Ohio -- one at 9:40 a.m. in West Chester and another at 10:28 a.m. in Cincinnati. This latest heist brings their total bank robberies in several states to eleven within a three month span. Police are concerned that the level of escalation in these bank robberies may eventually spiral out of control, and are asking the public to contact authorities with any information they may have on these string of robberies. Police describe Malik Dillard as a black male, 25 to 29 years old. He is between 5'8" and 5'10" and weighs about 200 lbs. Cops say he is heavy-built with short black hair and brown eyes. Witnesses describe him as wearing a multicolored hoodie jacket, black shorts with white trim and white tennis shoes. Police say this suspect has worn the same black shorts with white trim in four hold-ups thus far. Zarqurous Lequis Sanders is described as a black male, 21 to 26 years of age. He is between 5'6" and 6'0," weighing 150 to 190 lbs. He has a dark complexion, a slender build, short black hair and brown eyes. Witnesses say he was wearing a camouflage pattern hoodie jacket, blue jeans, white tennis shoes and a tan hat. He reportedly wore earrings in both ears. Suspect three is described as a black male, 5'10", weighing about 210 lbs. with a goatee and gold teeth. He was wearing a New York Yankees baseball cap. Cops say that this suspect implied he had a gun during the May 15 hold up in Raleigh, N.C. The woman seen in the Alabama robbery is described as a black female, between 19 and 26 years old, weighing about 160-180 lbs. Surveillance video shows her dressed in a light green tank top, with her hair pulled back into a ponytail. While the suspects take off on foot after the bank heists, cops believe that the robbers have been making their getaway in a white Dodge Magnum. Police say that the vehicle has no front license plate, but believe it does have a N.C. tag. Police also believe that the thieves used a black or green Dodge Durango in their Hoover, Ala. heist on June 10. -- by Denni Michael Wagner, AMW Staff
