U.S. Marshals: Israel Faked His Suicide And Ran |
|
| |
Samuel Israel used to be at the top of his game as the co-founder of a major hedge fund group in New York City. That was, until investors caught wind of the millions of dollars that he was stealing from them.
In April, Israel was tried and sentenced to 20 years in jail for fabricating investment returns and making up a fake accounting firm to sign off on documents.
Israel, desperate to make the charges disappear, allegedly tried to escape by faking his own death.
U.S. Marshals say that Israel's GMC Envoy was found parked near the Hudson River, the engine still idling, and the words "Suicide is Painless" written on the car. For a week, authorities labeled his death a suicide, but when no bodies washed ashore, U.S. Marshals made their conclusion: Israel was not dead, but a fugitive on the run. |

Girlfriend Charged With Helping Him Flee |
|
| |
It didn't take long for U.S. Marshals to learn that Israel had escaped with some help. They say his girlfriend, Debra Ryan, met Israel at an auto repair shop the day before his disappearance to fix his newly-purchased RV. Israel allegedly planned to attach a scooter to the back of the RV as another getaway vehicle.
U.S. Marshals also claim Ryan helped Israel pack the RV with his belongings, then drove with him to park it at a rest area off Interstate 84.
Ryan now faces ten years in prison for her role in the escape, and she is currently free on $75,000 bail.
