Mom's Former Boyfriend Implicated in Teen's Disappearance |

Authorities say Gerarlene Nicole Shepard, who goes by the name Nicole, headed toward her school bus stop in the early morning hours of April 23, 2008. Classmates saw a car approach and watched as Nicole got into the vehicle with an unknown man.
Police later determined the man driving the car was Mark Anthony Marcum. Cops say Marcum is an ex-boyfriend of Nicole's mother; he's a man to whom Nicole may have turned for comfort after recently experiencing some difficulty at school. |

Cops Continue Search for Runaway and Wanted Man |

Cops say Marcum dated Nicole's mother for ten years, practically raising Nicole and her sibling.
At some point, Marcum moved the family to Barboursville, W.Va., but authorities say Marcum and Nicole's mother have been separated for a little more than a year.
Cops say the 33-year-old Marcum is no stranger to authorities. He is currently wanted on felony burglary and misdemeanor domestic battery charges by police. Cops say if Marcum is traveling with Nicole, he is harboring a runaway and could face additional charges.
Police are anxious to locate Nicole and return the young girl to her distraught mother. And Nicole's mother isn't the only fraught with anxiety. Police say their anxiety level was heightened when State Police located Marcum's other vehicle -- a truck -- in Williamson, W.Va. Inside, authorities found camping equipment the pair could use to camp in the woods and evade authorities.
Cops have tracked the pair to Kentucky and believe they are possibly hiding out in the Jenny Wlley State Resort Park in Prestonsburg.
Police say Nicole was last seen wearing a black t-shirt, blue jeans, and a black hoodie with skulls on it. She has auburn hair and a scar on her hairline.
Authorities describe Marcum as a white male, 5'11", approximately 240 lbs. He has blue eyes and brown hair in a buzz cut hairstyle. |
