  Case Story
Delaware Father Sought For Felony Kidnapping
Cops say David Matusiewicz, once a respected Delaware optometrist, shattered the calm of his family's life when he kidnapped his three daughters and disappeared. The girls, Laura, 5, Leigh, 4, and Karen, 2, were last seen on Aug. 26, 2007 when Christine Belford, David's ex-wife, dropped the girls off for a visit with their father. Cops say Matusiewicz assured Belford that he and his mother, Lenore, would be taking the children on a two-week vacation. But cops say the vacation was a ruse, and law enforcement says Matusiewicz used the two weeks to completely disappear with the kids. Cops say Lenore Matusiewicz is assisting her son in his flight from the authorities, and they have issued a felony kidnapping warrant for her arrest as well. Even though her ex-husband might believe he is acting in the best interest of their children, Belford says, his actions show a blatant disregard for their emotional, psychological and physical wellbeing. Belford is also concerned for the health and wellbeing of Leigh, the couple's middle child, who is autistic. Belford fears Matusiewicz is not seeking the appropriate medical care for her Autism; Belford says her ex-husband was convinced he could "cure" Leigh with "biofeedback therapy," which he began researching shortly after Leigh was diagnosed. Cops urgently need to find Leigh to assess her physical condition and treat her Autism. They also need to find her sisters, who they believe are traveling with Matusiewicz and his mother, Lenore. Police believe Matusiewicz's ability to remain on the run has been buoyed by his access to cash. Based on information discovered by the FBI, Matusiewicz forged his ex-wife's signature on a loan document which netted him $249,000 -- more than enough money to assist with his flight from Delaware and the authorities.
