  Case Story
Drifter Sought In Wyo. Woman's Death
In November 2005, Uinta, Wyo. cops say that Lee Allen Michaels -- a 49-year-old drifter from Texas -- moved into an apartment with a roommate, Shannon Bohannon.  During that same year, the relationship soured and cops say there were reports of domestic abuse.  Michaels was arrested for public intoxication and police say that Michaels told the arresting officer that Shannon had given him AIDS. Uinta authorities say that Shannon tested positive for HIV in 2002, and was told that her health conditions were not life-threatening for the foreseeable future.  They say that she was consistent in keeping up with her doctor's appointments and always took her medications as prescribed. Public health records released in court documents say that in December 2005, Shannon was having difficulties with a man who moved in with her.  The documents also say that she could not get the man to leave her home, which was frustrating for Shannon because her living arrangements did not legally allow her to share her apartment.  The documents say the man threatened to tell Shannon's landlord that she had broken her agreement and he even threatened to destroy her car.  Cops believe this man was none other than Lee Allen Michaels. Shannon was able to enroll in a program that offered her lunchtime meals through a local health care program.  But as time passed, it was Michaels who began taking the meals from the delivery person, Joyce Stanley, on Shannon's behalf. According to court documents, Stanley claimed that in April 2006, Michaels told her that Shannon's health was failing and that he didn't believe that she had long to live. A welfare check sent to Shannon's residence on May 24, 2006 showed no one living in the residence.  Authorities learned that the last time Shannon received any medication was on April 8, 2006, and the person who picked up the medicine was Lee Allen Michaels.  When asked, neighbors told police that the last time they saw Michaels was on May 2. On June 11, 2006, a hiker in nearby Whitney Canyon came upon an object wrapped in duct tape lying in sage brush.  Police were called to the scene and discovered the remains of a deceased woman.  Two days later, a forensic autopsy positively identified the woman as Shannon Bohannon. A deputy from the Uinta County Sheriff's Office had been checking out pawn shops in the Evanston area, and came across a 13-point diamond ring that Michaels had pawned. After speaking with Lenore Phyle, Shannon's mother, cops say that the ring was identified as one that Shannon had been wearing.   Authorities also noticed that at the time of Shannon's disappearance, withdrawals from her Wells Fargo Bank account were made from Evanston, Wyo., Park City, Utah., and various areas in the Salt Lake Valley.  Cops later Identified Michaels as the person making the withdrawals based on the photos taken at the ATM machines. But on July 6, 2006, Wyo. police received a call from Salt Lake City cops saying that their suspected murderer was in custody.  Police interviewed Michaels and asked him questions about Shannon and the time line of their last days together and some things didn't seem to add up.  Nevertheless, Michaels soon posted bond and was on the streets again.  On Sept. 14, 2006, he was seen driving a maroon Ford Explorer with Utah plates.  The car would be reported stolen two days later, and was being driven by four people who said they traded the car to "a white boy" for five grams of crack cocaine. Cops believe the white boy in question was Lee Allen Michaels. Lee Allen Michaels is still at large and cops say he is being charged with the murder of Shannon Bohannon.  They say he may be using illegal drugs and could be a self-employed window washer.
