Raging Temper Results in Raging Fire |
|
| |
"Tormu Prall took away the love of my life," cried Kim Meadows, the last surviving victim of a New Jersey arson fire. "I look down at my legs and see the scars, and it reminds me of that awful morning."
On September 25, 2007, she woke to the horror of flames surrounding her and engulfing her boyfriend's body. In those early morning hours, Kim and John Prall ran screaming from the second story of the house they shared. At first, they didn't know what had hit them, but they were glad to escape from the fire.
John died a few days later from the severe burns that covered 80 percent of his body. Kim survived, but lives with horrific scars on her legs and parts of her body, reminding her every day of that tragic fire.
Cops quickly learned the fire was arson, and soon pinned it on Tormu Prall, John's younger brother. They say the Prall brothers had an awful argument over paying bills and living together, according to detectives. Detectives zeroed in on Prall after hearing John's last words: "My brother did this."
The investigation has revealed that Prall has a history of bad tempers, criminal charges and a long rap sheet. He has spent most of his life in and out of jails and prison on charges of drugs and violent assaults. |

Detectives Criss Cross the Northeast Looking for Prall |
|
| |
With a murder warrant in hand, detectives began the manhunt for Tormu Prall. After chasing down lead after lead, the case grew cold. Then, cops got the break they needed -- in Cambridge, Mass.
Cambridge detectives were investigating a small arson fire on May 8, 2008 at an apartment building where a woman said her boyfriend, "Reggie Sanders," tried to burn his way into her place. Cops learned that Sanders frequented homeless shelters, so they scoured area shelters.
It didn't take long to locate the shelter where Sanders was staying, but they had missed him. Later that day, Sanders was spotted in Cambridge's Central Square, where a foot chase ensued. They lost his trail, but later learned Sanders allegedly broke into a home where he reportedly took a shower, stole clothes, and dropped a homeless shelter ID.
Meanwhile, Boston police arrested a man by the name of "Denzel Willington" for disorderly conduct. He refused to have his fingerprints taken, and was in jail for three days until a judge ordered that his prints be taken. Before the prints were processed, Willington was released.
He was long gone by the time cops learned that Willington was, in fact, Tormu Prall.
In late May 2008, New Jersey cops traveled north and began searching homeless shelter along, with Boston Police detectives, looking for Prall. At the same time, Cambridge detectives were still trying to find Reggie Sanders in homeless shelters. It turned out the three police agencies crossed paths with the help of shelter managers and learned that Willington, Sanders and Prall are all the same man. |

Prall Taunts Police |
|
| |
Cops spent the summer following up leads to no avail until early August 2008. A witness in Morrisville, Pa. called police, reporting a suspicious man leaving a home. Fortunately, the witness wrote down the tag number of the getaway car.
The tag traced back to a stolen car in Rhode Island. Detectives pieced together that the home in Pennsylvania was robbed of jewelry and other valuables, and left behind was a homeless shelter ID from Rhode Island belonging to a "Jacob Breyers." Cops say Breyers tried to burglarize his new girlfriend's pad, and is believed to have abandoned the stolen Honda in Connecticut.
This was good news for the New Jersey cops who caught wind of the incident and connected the dots, leading them to Prall.
Sgt. Luddie Austin believes Prall is taunting the investigators, since he seems to purposely drop his homeless shelter IDs every time decides to change his identity.
Sgt. Austin and the U.S. Marshals' NJ-NY Fugitive Task Force continue to search homeless shelters in the Northeast, assuming Prall is surviving on the run by relying on the kindness of others. They want to stop him before he kills again.
After the Sept. 6, 2008 broadcast of Prall's case, an AMW viewer called stating Prall was recently spotted at a Hartford, Conn. homeless shelter using the new alias, Michael Harvey. A team of cops swarmed the shelter and tracked down new information and associates, which led them even closer to their fugitive.
Sgt. Austin believes they are closer than ever, possibly just hours behind Prall. Prall, a.k.a. Michael Harvey, may be hiding out in Connecticut and Rhode Island. Cops think that Prall is funding his fugitive status through burglaries and by donating blood, as well as participating in research projects. Prall also has a front grill made of white gold or platinum.
As for survivor Kim Meadows, not a day goes by when she says she doesn't think about her late fiance, John Prall, and the raging fire that left her scarred for life, both physically and emotionally.
