Home Invasion Homicide in Penngrove, California |
|
| |
It was about sunset on the evening of February 24, 2003 when Sonoma County sheriffs say that members of the Magoulas family had just left their home in a tony subdivision of Penngrove, Calif. for a birthday party across town. Cristos "Pete" Magoulas, a Greek immigrant and head of the household, had decided to stay home and rest up after having a hard day's work. Cops say that Pete wasn't the only family member who stayed behind in their 5,000 square foot six bedroom home. His 9-year-old son, Danny, decided to ditch the party and played Nintendo in the lower level of the residence while Pete's teenager, Christopher, also chose to hang at home.
Cops say that Pete fell asleep in the den on the couch while Danny continued to play video games and Christopher left home telling his father that he would "see him in a bit." Police say that Christopher headed out to the store to get a candy bar and passed a maroon Dodge Caravan driving into his cul de sac. The teen didn't realize that the vehicle was headed towards his home to burglarize his family and cops say he was lucky to have left when he did.
The van pulled into the driveway and parked outside of the Magoula's home where police say one of the suspects stayed outside on the lookout while seven other suspects, with ages ranging between 17 and 24-years-old, exited the car and entered the residence. Once inside, cops say the suspects began looting the home. They split up and police say that they found pillowcases upstairs and filled them with jewelry and downstairs they nabbed the silverware and some collectibles. |

Once the suspects stepped into the den off the foyer, cops say they were shocked to find Pete who was awakening from his nap on the couch. They say Pete demanded that the burglars leave the premises and a couple of the suspects, including Diego Carreon, charged towards him, pushed him onto the sofa, punched him a few times, and pushed his face down into a cushion. Cops say that Carreon took some rope and tied Pete's hands behind his back.
Meanwhile, while nine-year-old Danny was still gaming in the room that was just one staircase below the den, cops say that he heard fighting and screams from his father coming from the den. Petrified with fear, cops say the boy stayed silent at the bottom of the staircase fearing the worst as his father's cries escalated. There was a sudden silence and police say that Danny thought his father may be dead, so he exited through a back door and ran about a mile to a neighbor's home seeking help.
Danny's neighbors drove him back to the house and cops say the suspects were finishing up the job. Some of the guys were carrying the Magoulas' big screen tv across the front porch and cops say that when the neighbors pulled up to the house, they dropped the tv and drove off in their vehicle. The other suspects took off on foot and cops say the other son, Christopher, was just returning from the market as the burglars got away.
The neighbors entered the Magoulas residence and made their way to the den where cops say they found the lifeless body of Pete Magoulas. Authorities say that cops had already swarmed the neighborhood before the rest of Pete's family returned home from the birthday party and learned the horrific news. Pete passed away due to cardiac arrest during the attack and cops say that the suspects were not only facing robbery charges, but they were now being sought for murder.
Since that devastating evening, cops say that information has uprooted regarding the suspects involved in the robbery/homicide. They say that one of the suspects, 17-year-old Larry "Lunchmeat" Lewis, agreed to work with investigators and told them that the group of suspects referred to themselves as the gang, 'The Network'. Police were then able to identify the other assailants.
Authorities were able to determine that a 19-year-old-female, Jamie Herrala, was the "mastermind" behind the burglary plot. Cops say that Herrala had dated one of Pete's stepsons and had a baby with him. The birthday party for Pete's step grandson was part of her master plan to lure the Magoula family out of their home so the suspects could rob them blind.
Since the murder, Herrala and six others involved in the fatal home invasion have been convicted. AMW and Sonoma County cops need your help in locating the gang's heavy hitter, Diego Carreon. Cops say he may be hiding out somewhere in southern Calif. If you know anything regarding the suspected killer's whereabouts, call 1-800-CRIME-TV!
