Case Story |
|
| |
Soldier Convicted Of Sick Crimes Against Children |
|
| |
It all began with what was supposed to be a Christmas visit to North Plainfield, N.J.
Cops say 33-year-old Sgt. Angel Bolivar Parada, stationed at Fort Drum, agreed to host his friend's children over the holiday break. But instead of experiencing the joy of the season, one of the children was molested.
According to police, Parada's friend drove from Maryland to drop off the children for a visit with family and friends. One night, as the little girl changed into her pajamas in a basement room, Parada cornered her. Despite her cries for him to stop, Parada continued his assault.
At the end of the Christmas break, Parada drove his friend's children back to their mother in Maryland as if nothing had ever happened. |

On Jan. 19, 2006, the young victim gathered the courage to tell her mother that Parada had raped her. The girl's mother rushed her to a local emergency room and a nurse alerted police.
After interviewing the victim, detectives from Maryland and New Jersey contacted Parada. Under questioning, Parada admitted to the sexual assault, but claimed he blacked out from drinking too much and didn't remember the incident. Police issued an arrest warrant and Parada was taken into custody.
He was later released on $75,000 cash bail. It would take two long years before a jury would get to hear the case against him.
On Jan. 10, 2008, a jury convened. In the presence of the D.A., defense attorneys and a jury of his peers, Angel Bolivar Parada sat and listened to the evidence against him.
But on Jan. 23, 2008 right before jury deliberations were to begin, Parada failed to appear in court.
No one was surprised when jurors came back the next day with a verdict finding Parada guilty. He was convicted in absentia of first degree Aggravated Sexual Assault and second degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Parada's bail was immediately revoked and an arrest warrant was issued. |

Police say Parada arrived in the U.S. 19-years ago from his native country Quito, Ecuador. He had been a sergeant in the U.S. Army for seven-years and worked as a computer analyst in the HCC Tech Mountain Division at Fort Drum. Three weeks before he was arrested, he was scheduled to deploy to Iraq.
Instead of deploying overseas, Parada faced a jury that would decide his fate. But Parada didn't wait for the jury's verdict. He disappeared shortly after closing arguments in his trial and hasn't been seen since.
Authorities say Parada spent time in Va., N.C., and Md. while serving in the military. He has extensive contacts all over the world and may try to return to his native Ecuador. |
