LAPD To AMW: Help Us Capture One Of Our Most-Wanted Killers |

What started off as a family-oriented celebration of the Cambodian New Year at a Buddhist Temple ended in a melee and a murder. Now, Los Angeles Police Department Asian Crime detectives are hot on the trail of 19-year-old Soperry Chea who is wanted for the stabbing death of another festival attendee.
On April 17, 2005, Chea, who was 16-years-old at the time, and his 22-year-old girlfriend were at the Khmer Buddhist Temple in LA's Rampart community. Like the hundreds of other attendees, Chea was enjoying the day-long festivities. Chea was even videotaped dancing with his girlfriend's baby. However, as the festival was coming to an end, violence quickly erupted.
Police say at approximately 9:35 p.m., Chea, who is a member of the Van Nuys Asian Boyz gang, got into a stare-down with another man. Chea's fellow gang members caught wind of the tension and went to back their man. A fight erupted and the man took Chea to the ground, but according to detectives, Chea was able to overcome his opponent and then pinned him down. Cops say Chea then pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim to death.
As Chea fled from the temple, he ran past a security guard who cops say fired several rounds at him. However, the security guard then recognized Chea as being the son of a friend and let him escape.
Days later, cops say Chea was seen in Bakersfield or Fresno, Calif. Chea was charged with murder and although he was a juvenile, prosecutors intended to charge him as an adult.
In 2007, Chea was added to the LAPD's Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list, however, in March 2008, he was arrested after a tipster called Los Angeles authorities. |
