Convicted Child Rapist Molests Children With Family Nearby |

Every parent wants to protect their children from danger, but many times danger finds them, even where they feel most safe -- at home.
In August 2005, police say a mother and her three children walked into the Schuylkill County, Pa. police station and relayed a horrific tale about how a man named Russell Rehrig, Jr. sexually assaulted the children for almost a year.
Police say the children, ages 15, 14, and 11 at the time, told them the man would come over to the house during the week telling their family members he needed to use the bathroom. But instead -- cops say -- Rehrig would go upstairs and sexually abuse the children.
According to police, Rehrig told the children, two of which are mentally challenged, that if they did not comply, he would harm their parents. After a year of sexual assaults, police say one of the sons finally gathered the courage to tell his mother about the abuse. |

County Error Allows Rapist to Flee Before Trial |

Authorities arrested Rehrig and during questioning he admitted to the sexual assaults. But cops say Rehrig had no plans to face justice. After showing up to several pre-trial conferences, Rehrig did a disappearing act.
A bench warrant was issued and Rehrig was re-arrested. Unfortunately for Rehrig's victims, he was granted bail for the second time. This time police say an error at the county clerk's office allowed Rehrig to walk free after posting $1,500 in bail instead of the actual bail set by the judge -- $15,000. By the time his trial was set to begin on Sept. 4, 2007, Rehrig was long gone.
Although a jury convicted him in abstentia the next day on several counts of rape of a child as well as several counts of statutory sexual assault, Rehrig managed to stay one-step ahead of the police. |

The Odd Job Predator |

Police say Rehrig worked various jobs, though his most recent was as a taxi driver. Cops say at the time of his arrest, Rehrig worked at a store selling T-shirts and candy.
According to Rehrig's wife, Rehrig fancied Nashville, Tenn. and liked the idea of living there.
Police have not recovered Rehrig's vehicle: a four-door, red, 2000 Chevy Metro registered in the state of Pennsylvania, license plate number GFE-8117. Relatives said the front bumper is missing paint and the rear of the car has a JD Byrider sticker on the left side by the trunk.
Investigators say Rehrig has fled before to avoid prosecution and believe he may be in Lehigh Valley, Pa., Fayetteville, N.C., Rogersville, Tenn., Glendale, Ariz. or Aurora, Colo.

Atlantic County Sheriff's Department arrested convicted child rapist, Russell Rehrig, on Sept. 5, 2008.
Cops say Rehrig was standing in front of an Atlantic City casino when officers spotted him.
Pennsylvania detectives say Rehrig gave officers a false name - Richard Johnson. But Rehrig finally told officers his real name.
Cops say Rehrig absconded from Pennsylvania in September 2007 during his trial on child rape charges.
Rehrig was convicted in abstentia on 5 counts of Rape, 5 counts of Rape of a Child, 4 counts of Involuntary Deviate Sexual Intercourse, 5 counts of Statutory Sexual Assault, 2 counts of Aggrevated Indecent Assault, 2 counts of Indecent Assault, 4 counts of Corruption of Minors, and Terroristic Threats.
Police say an extradition hearing for Rehrig is scheduled for Tuesday. |
