  Case Story
Police: Robber's Best-Laid Plans Go Awry
In February 2001, Ricky Regalado thought he had the perfect plan in place.  Along with his boys, Pat O'Hara and Robert Huerena, Regalado was going to steal two cars, rob a bank in one and get away in another.  It wasn't long before cops caught onto their plot, and on Valentine's Day 2002, cops in Lakewood, Colo. had Regalado in custody. Before he knew what hit him, Regalado was a resident of a Colorado Department of Corrections facility. Fast forward to May 2007. Regaldo was released from a halfway house a free man, but a month later -- on June 30 -- cops in Arvada, Colo. say Regalado couldn't stay on the right side of the law.  Rumors surfaced about a feud brewing between Regalado and his niece's boyfriend, Shawn Rodriguez, Jr. Cops say that feud exploded. When all was said and done, Shawn lay dead in his apartment, shot multiple times, and Regalado was charged with the murder.  Before Arvada cops could track Regalado, the diminutive convict was on the run again.

Out, And Back To His Old Ways
Cops caught up with Regalado's cohorts in the Colorado murder, but couldn't track Regalado down. Cops tell us he wouldn't keep a low profile for long. They say on October 3, 2007, Regalado walked into the Vons Market in Redlands, Calif. and made his way to the U.S. Bank branch inside. Surveillance images caught a truly cowardly act: cops say the images show Regalado take an elderly woman and drag her up to the counter. Was she an insurance policy to ensure he'd get away? Was she a hostage? Whatever the purpose, the plan worked, and cops say Regalado successfully robbed the bank. But he wasn't done yet: on October 23, 2007, cops say Regalado and an accomplice -- a man named Robert Stephens -- knocked another bank over in nearby Beaumont, Calif. This time, though, it wouldn't be such a smooth getaway.

  A Daring Escape
Beaumont police quickly announced a bank robbery in progress, and Lt. Scott Beard and Sgt. Greg Fagan were soon in quick pursuit.  The chase progressed along San Timoteo Canyon Road, a winding road connecting Beaumont and Redlands. The road is mostly isolated, with train tracks on the right side and farms and orange groves on the left. For miles, the pursuit continued until dash-mounted cameras showed the getaway car slam on the brakes. Were they giving themselves up? Hardly. Cops say the video shows Regalado roll out the passenger door of the still-moving car and sprint across the railroad tracks, right in front of a moving train. By the time cops got out of the cars, the train separated them from the getaway artist. It was an agonizing four minute wait for cops before they could go after the bank robber. By then, he'd disappeared into the thick brush on the other side.
