  Case Story
  Talk About A "Smooth" Criminal
Dennis Lilly's nickname is no joke.  He goes by "Slick", even has it tattooed on his arm, and over the years he has truly lived up to his moniker. Police say Lilly has escaped from prison four times.  His first breakout was in 1975 from the Wyandotte County Jail in Kansas City, Kan., three days into a five-year theft sentence.  Jail officials say Lilly and four accomplices used pieces of pipe from their jail cell to bore a hole through a 1"-thick brick wall near their cells and into the courthouse next door.  They used a towel to cover the hole until it was complete. After going through the wall, police say the group smashed through a skylight in the courthouse, then climbed down blankets they tied into ropes, and just slipped out the front doors.  Lilly was caught two weeks later.

Two Escapes From The Same Prison
Lilly was then put into the Kansas State Penitentiary, where he escaped again in 1977 by stealing a prison truck (he was caught three weeks later), and in 1981 by stealing a prison guard's uniform.  In Lilly's last attempt, prison officials say he fooled another prison guard into letting him into the control tower, then with six other inmates overtook the tower and walked out one gate, then climbed over two fences to escape. He was caught just hours later after a shootout that critically injured a Bonner Springs, Kan. police officer.  This time, Lilly was transferred to the maximum security Missouri State Penitentiary as part of an Interstate Corrections Compact.

A Few Tries, Then He's Out
Bill Armatrout, former warden of Missouri State Penitentiary, says he was well aware of Lilly's exploits when he received Lilly as an inmate.  But even under tight scrutiny, Lilly still made several attempts to get out, either by cutting through the bars on his tiny windows with scrap metal, or fashioning a dummy to look like him laying in bed, made out of toilet paper and using his own hair.  He was always caught in the act. But the last time, Armatrout says, December 13, 1986, was Lilly's most brazen.  The warden says Lilly stole pieces of a prison guard uniform one item at a time, until he had the entire uniform.  Then he made a dummy head out of toilet paper, painted it flesh color, cut his hair and pasted it on the dummy.  Then during shift change, Lilly put on the guard uniform and calmly walked through three security points, finally walking right out the front gate. The former warden describes Lilly as a very likable guy, and it's almost hard to believe he's a conman.  Armatrout also says Lilly was a very meticulous person about the way he dressed and his speech, and he was a smooth talker. In 2001, an AMW viewer reported he'd seen Lilly on a small Mexican island near Puerto Vallarta.  The FBI and Mexican authorities investigated, and found other people who recognized Lilly's photo.  He even called himself Dennis Lilly, and taught parasailing.  But he disappeared before authorities could catch up to him. Police say he could be with his wife, Mary Lilly, who had a young daughter back in 1986 who would be college-aged now.
