  Case Story
University Of Alabama Student Gunned Down
Police say 20-year-old Kayla Fanaei was found dead in her convertible BMW in the early morning hours of October 8, 2007.  She was a junior at the University of Alabama Birmingham. Police say Kayla had attended a surprise birthday party for a friend at an off campus residence.  Friends told police that she left just before 1 a.m.   Police say Kayla made it safely to her car and began to drive home, but decided to pull over to take a call on her cell phone.  Police say Kayla sat in her car in the parking lot of Glen Iris Elementary School, just five blocks from the party,  and talked to a friend of hers in Auburn.  Police say even though Kayla did the right thing by pulling over to talk on the phone, some one did the wrong thing. The friend Kayla was talking to on the phone told police that he heard a man approach her car and ask her if she worked at the school.  Kayla told the man no.  When the friend asked Kayla who she was talking to, she replied, "just some guy."  Police say Kayla continued to talk to her friend for another ten minutes and then became frightened.  She told her friend that the men were coming back and that she had to go.  The friend told police he then heard Kayla say "oh no, oh no," and then a gunshot. He stayed on the phone with Kayla trying to get her to respond, but there was only silence on the other end.  The friend didn't know where Kayla was so he started calling all of her friends. In the meantime, police received a 9-1-1 call from some one near the elementary school who heard the gun shots.  When police arrived they found Kayla in the driver's seat of her convertible BMW.  She was shot and sadly there was nothing they could do to save her life. Police say they are conducting an investigation and following up any leads.  They have no motive for the shooting, but do believe Kayla was a random victim.  Police are still hoping that some one will come forward with the information they need to solve this case.

Kayla Lived her Life to Help Others
Kayla's mom, Robin, told "America's Most Wanted" that her daughter's mission in life was to change the world, even if it was just one person at a time.  Robin says her daughter was a junior at the University of Alabama Birmingham and was majoring in psychology.  She volunteered at a Birmingham Crisis Center suicide hotline.  She really was trying to help people on a daily basis. Kayla's mom says she was a huge soccer fan and was very devoted to the men's and women's soccer team at UAB.  Her mom was touched when both teams attended Kayla's service.  Now she just wants answers as to why some one took her daughter's life. The family has posted a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Kayla's killer or killers.
