  Case Story
  Animal Control Officer Found Dead
On June 18, 2007, Officer Bobby Evans began his day at the Bellmead animal shelter at 8:30 a.m. as usual. Cops believe, shortly after, Officer Evans left the shelter to respond to an animal distress call.  At around 9:30 a.m. Officer Evan's friend and colleague James Karl, Chief of the Bellmead Fire Department started calling him. However, he got no response. Chief Karl wasted no time getting to the animal shelter to look for Officer Evans. Something was just not right.  Officer Evans' truck was outside the animal shelter and a black cat was in it. Inside the building, Chief Karl stumbled upon Officer Evans' lifeless body, wedged inside the doorway. He had been shot several times in the back.

  Caught in the Crosshairs
The crime scene revealed few clues as to what happened the morning Officer Evans' body was discovered. But a search of the surrounding area revealed several footprints from a pair size 12 Wolverine brand work boots that police believe belong to the killer.  Aside from the footprints, police saw no sign of a struggle. According to cops, there was no evidence to suggest that Evans had been threatened in the days, weeks or months leading up to his murder. Police have also obtained surveillance video from a nearby hardware store, showing what looks to be Officer Evans' truck heading back to the animal shelter at around 9:17 a.m. Authorities don't rule out that Officer Bobby Evans may have known his killer and theorize that the shooter could have been a disgruntled pet owner upset at having an animal removed from his home or even euthanized.

  Coward on the Run
Like a wisp of smoke, the person that killed Officer Evans has drifted into the darkness without a trace. Was it a robbery? A personal grudge? Or an issue related to the Animal Shelter? Police don't know. With no concrete motive for the shooting, no weapon and little to go on, the Evans' family struggles to come to terms with his sudden death. The police, now joined by the Texas Rangers, continue to follow several leads in the fatal shooting death of the seven year veteran of the Bellmead Animal Shelter. Currently, there are no suspects or witnesses in this case.
