Case Story |

MyStory by Patty Baur |
|
| |
Shawn and Scott were childhood friends. Over the years, they had drifted apart, finding different groups of friends to spend the majority of their time with. A week before the accident Shawn and Scott bumped into each other and made plans to celebrate their 16th birthdays together.
Five years have passed since my husband Barry and I saw and last spoke to our only son, Shawn, who was 15 in 2002. On July 17, 2002 around 1:55 a.m., Shawn's body was found on a dark rural road in Butler County, Pa.
The driver of the car that found them immediately called 9-1-1. Scott was dead at the scene and Shawn was critically injured. Shawn was airlifted by a medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa. Shawn died shortly after arriving to the hospital.
The boys told me they had planned to go to nearby Cranberry Township for dinner and then maybe go to a nearby State Park for a hike. Unfortunately, as teenagers do, they changed their plans and didn't inform their parents. A friend said he knew someone who would buy them alcohol and then they would go to a local pond to drink.
According to police, the two boys left the party at the pond around 1 in the morning in order to go to another friend's house. However, the boys didn't stay long, and began the short walk to Shawn's house around 1:30 a.m. |

Almost No Clues To Work With |
|
| |
Everything from that point is a mystery. With no witnesses, skid marks, broken glass or vehicle parts at the scene, police have few clues. It took two years for DNA reports to indicate that both boys most likely were struck by a vehicle and in all probability, were the victims of a fatal hit-and-run. The country road [where the boys were found] typically receives only local traffic. Police are almost certain that the driver who hit the two lived nearby.
Police were left with very little evidence at the crime scene. It appeared as though Scott had been struck, dragged, and run over by a large vehicle, yet there was no evidence of any damage to a vehicle at the scene. Shawn's injuries were even more mysterious to the cops. He had only one injury, a forcible blow to his head. He was still alive when the police arrived at the scene, but died shortly afterward at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Detectives were not able to determine conclusively that Shawn had died as a result of being struck by a vehicle. Although they believe it is possible he was struck by an object protruding from a vehicle, such as a side-view mirror, they have no way to know this for sure. |

The Aftermath |
|
| |
It has been five agonizing years since my son Shawn died. Since that day, my husband's, my daughter's, and my life have changed forevers. My friends' lives as well as our whole community's lives have been changed. The outpouring of support and love from everyone has been overwhelming.
Anyone that knew these boys knew what good hearts they had and that no one deserves to have their lives end so tragically. Shawn was a daring individual who's motto was "Fear Nothing," a tattoo which his father now wears on his right shoulder. He loved to be outdoors whether it be fishing and hunting with his father riding motorcycles, camping with his family or speeding down the slopes on snow skis. Shawn had a very loving and caring personality and is missed by many every day.
When the initial police investigation failed to turn up any suspects, the police began to look at many different people that lived in the area. Over the next weeks and months the police looked at hundreds of people and inspected a number of vehicles. Tips were steadily called into the police department, but nothing worked out.
I am begging of anyone who may have information that can bring some closure for me, my family, and Scott's family to come forward. There is a $20,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction.
The most tragic part of this story is not only did two young boys lose their lives senselessly, but the fact that someone killed these boys and never gave another thought to it. How anyone could live day by day for over five years knowing they had taken two lives is incomprehensible to me. I can only hope that somehow, someway, this person or persons will be caught. Not knowing the details of what happened has made it impossible to move on. There can be no closure without answers. |
