  Case Story
Once A Survivor, Now A Murder Victim
U.S. Marshals say that fugitive Miguel Mateos-Martinez had been on the run long enough. In 2004, Faviola Hernandez was a heroic survivor of a vicious robbery at the salon where she was employed as a hairdresser.  While working at Patricia's Hair Salon in Salt Lake City, a robber brutally attacked Hernandez, threatened to kill her, bound her wrists together with a blanket and locked her in a bathroom.  Eventually, Faviola was able to free herself.  The robber got away with only $243 and ended up with a prison sentence of eight years to life.  But three years later, Faviola wasn't so lucky, and now her accused killer is running from police and U.S. Marshals. Homicide detectives say 24-year-old Faviola was the victim of a brazen attack on August 15, 2007 at The Shop salon she operated in the Glendale community of Salt Lake City.  The salon had been open for only 30 minutes, police say, when 19-year-old Miguel Mateos-Martinez ran in brandishing a silver .22-caliber handgun.  He announced he was robbing the salon and demanded money.  According to the three witnesses inside the salon, everyone complied with Mateos-Martinez's demands. Cops say Faviola went into a room in the rear of the salon, presumably to retrieve money. However, authorities say that Faviola had a handgun in her purse, next to her money. When she returned to the front of the store, police believe Mateos-Martinez saw Faviola's weapon and shot and killed her even though she never brandished the gun.  A single bullet struck Faviola in the heart, killing her instantly.

  A Tipster Helps Police
Police say Mateos-Martinez fled the botched robbery with no money and left three stunned witnesses behind, including Faviola's two young siblings.  He escaped in a get-away car driven by an associate, 22-year-old Jesus Jimenez, who had been once charged with aggravated kidnapping, robbery and assault of another woman. A tipster told detectives that Jimenez had confessed to the shooting incident and admitted to being Mateos-Martinez's getaway driver.  Police tracked down Jimenez, and he identified Mateos-Martinez as the shooter.  Police immediately obtained a warrant for Mateos-Martinez.  Police impounded the get-away vehicle and Jimenez was booked on suspicion of homicide and is currently being held without bond at Salt Lake County jail.

U.S. Marshals Bolster Search For Fugitive
AMW profiled Mateos-Martinez in November 2007.  In March 2008, U.S. Marshals upped the ante for Mateos-Martinez, adding him to their "15 Most Wanted Fugitives" list.  Salt Lake City cops and U.S. Marshals teamed up and didn't give up until Mateos-Martinez was in custody.  "The victim was not resisting, was not fighting, and yet was still gunned down.  This is an unimaginable act of violence and we are determined to do everything we can to track down and apprehend this ruthless criminal," a Marshals spokesman said.
