Son Heard Mother Utter Last Words |
|
| |
It was the middle of the night on September 29, 2004. Ryan Girgis, then 17 years old, recalls ripping off the duct tape, grabbing his cell phone and escaping from his own home after being locked in his bedroom closet. His captors were still struggling with his mother. When Ryan returned home, police told him that his mother was dead - nearly decapitated. Detectives said they couldn't make sense of the crime scene; it appeared as if it was a home invasion, but nothing was stolen.
In a letter to America's Most Wanted, Ryan wrote that at first, he thought his older brother was horse-playing when he felt a hand over his face. However, when Ryan took into account that it was 3:30 a.m. and the person on top of him smelled like weed and oil, he quickly realized that his life was in danger. Ryan tried to fight off his attackers, but a second suspect helped subdue him. Ryan screamed for help, calling for his brother and mother. When Ryan's mother, Ariet, ran from her bedroom, the second suspect attacked her. It was precisely this moment that Ryan says is forever etched in his mind, as this was the last time he would see his mother alive.
Ryan was bound and gagged with duct tape and left in his closet. As Ryan recalled, one of the suspects said to him, "I know what you're going through. I know your circumstances. I'm not going to kill you." It was a strange assurance from the suspect, causing Ryan to wonder why the perpetrators were inside his home. Inside the closet, Ryan was helpless as he heard his mother scream her last words. |

A "Clean" Crime Scene Leads Investigators Elsewhere |
|
| |
Several minutes passed and the house fell silent. Ryan made his frantic escape, grabbing his cell phone before running to his neighbor's home. No one answered the door at that early morning hour, so while running to a nearby friend's house, Ryan called the police.
When patrol officers arrived at the Girgis house, they found Ariet dead. The coroner was able to precisely identify the murder weapon from the injuries Ariet sustained.
Police say the crime scene was "clean." No money was stolen so they ruled out home invasion and turned the focus of the investigation elsewhere.
Police told America's Most Wanted that at the time of the murder, Ariet's husband was on trial for domestic violence. He was subsequently convicted and spent one year in county jail.
Authorities are asking for the public's assistance in identifying and locating the two suspects who brutally murdered Ariet Girgis. Ryan helped authorities develop a composite sketch of one of the suspects, who is described as a black male, 6'1" - 6'2", approximately 220-235 lbs. and has black hair. Suspect number two is described as a black male, 23-26 years old and approximately six feet tall. If you know anything about Ariet Girgis' murder, you can submit your tip to America's Most Wanted on this website or call 1-800-CRIME-TV. You can remain anonymous. |
