New Jersey: Deadly Destination |

When 37-year-old Lavern Paul Ritch, a man reportedly named one of Great Britain's most eligible bachelors, embarked on a two-week vacation to the U.S., he stopped in the Cherry Hill, N.J. area to visit with friends. But investigators with the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office say his visit turned deadly on August 12, 2007.
Ritch, who lived in Penarth, Wales, was reportedly having a great time on his vacation, hitting the beach, and going out to restaurants and bars in Margate, N.J. -- an island resort a few miles from Atlantic City. Investigators believe Ritch spent the night of Saturday, August 11 and the early morning hours of August 12 out and about in Margate -- until something went terribly wrong.
Investigators say around 2:00 a.m., Ritch and his friends left a bar. Police speculate that upon leaving, Ritch may have have witnessed someone being chased or attacked outside. Investigators say Ritch may have tried to help the situation by getting involved, but the "Good Samaritan" ended up paying with his life. Cops say Rich was stabbed once in the heart, and died at a nearby hospital about an hour later. |

Police released surveillance video of a man they want to speak with about Ritch's murder. The man they're seeking is described as white, 35 to 45 years old, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a medium to heavy build. Police say the man has dark hair, which could contain some gray, and was wearing a green hat with a flat top and a short brim, similar to an army fatigue hat.
Investigators say the unknown man was kicked out of a bar that night, and may have returned later that night looking for a fight. Investigators believe Ritch was probably in the wrong place at the wrong time.
According to investigators, the murder weapon to kill Ritch has not been located. Police believe there may have been other witnesses to the murder, and and urge anyone who knows anything to come forward with the information. They are especially interested in knowing if anyone found a hat in the surrounding area of the crime scene after 2:00 a.m.
Ritch was known as one of Britain's most eligible bachelors in a 2002 poll by Company Magazine. He was also reportedly named the 12th Most Eligible Man in Wales the same year by a local newspaper. He had also reportedly appeared as a contestant on a British reality television program called "Gladiators" in 1998. |
