Case Story |
|

Violence Strikes Rural Minnesota |
|
| |
On August 4, 2007, Ruth Ouverson was found dead in bedroom closet at her house in rural Montrose, Minn. The Wright County, Minn. Sheriff's Office investigated what appeared to be a random burlgary that turned into murder. Cops soon learned Ruth's ATM card and her 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee were missing.
Police also found two firearms and neither were Ouverson's. It didn't take them too long to figure out where they came from. Just three days earlier, on August 1, someone broke into a house a mile away from the Ouverson's and stole four guns. Two of the guns stolen were found at the house where Ruth was killed. |

The Investigation Moves From Minnesota to North Dakota |
|
| |
Detectives learned that someone used Ruth's ATM card at several different convenient stores. First, in Buffalo, Minn. cops say surveillance video at a Super America gas station shows a man wearing dark shorts, an orange Harley Davidson T-shirt and sneakers using Ouverson's card. When questioned, the clerk mentioned that the suspect asked for directions to Fargo, N.D.
Later in the day, the same man used the victim's card at a Super Express Shell gas station in Monticelly, Minn., very close to Highway 94, which leads to Fargo. Surveillance video shows him at the store. But outside the store, still photos provided another important clue: the same man driving Ouverson's Jeep was not alone -- a woman was sitting next to him.
Minnesota detectives allerted cops in Fargo to be on the look out for Ouverson's Jeep and it paid off as a Fargo police officer spotted it in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart with the two other missing guns in it. |

Detectives Discover Who They're Looking For |
|
| |
Detectives got fingerprints from the abandoned Jeep and a match came up right away: 27-year-old Jeremy Dewayne Brooks. They soon found out he was in more trouble in Slidell, La., wanted for first-degree attempted murder and armed robbery charges. His accomplice in that incident was 28-year-old Coty Danos Martinez, who was arrested on August 15, 2007 in North Dakota.
Meanwhile, Brooks, a former a heavyweight boxer, is still on the run for the crimes police believe he committed in Louisiana and Minnesota. |
