  Case Story
Lady of the Dunes Murder Mystery Still Unsolved
For more than thirty years, the residents of Provincetown, Mass. have been haunted by a murder mystery that has left residents and law enforcement with more questions than answers. She has come to be known as "the lady of the dunes." Her bludgeoned and mutilated body was found in the summer of 1974 amid the rolling sand dunes of Race Point Beach. Her skull had been crushed, her head nearly decapitated and her hands meticulously cut off, leaving no fingerprints behind.

  Clues, But No Killer
The woman's badly decomposed body was found on July 26, 1974, by a 13-year-old girl walking her dog. In the summer heat and with the dune flies eating away at the remains, the medical examiner believed the woman had been dead anywhere from two days to two weeks. Police believe the woman was between 25 and 35 years old, 5'6'' to 5'8'', 140 to 150 pounds, with reddish-blonde hair. The unidentified female had unusually expensive dental work; police estimate she had $5,000 to $7,000 worth of gold crowns. The woman's size 34 Wrangler jeans were left folded beside her naked body. A blue print bandana was left at the crime scene and police say the woman was found lying on one side of her beach towel, as if she had been sharing it. After the killer cut off the woman's hands, police say he replaced them with small piles of pine needles. There was no sign of a struggle, leading authorities to believe the woman knew her attacker. But so far, despite composite sketches and computer generated recreations of the woman's face, authorities have been unable to identify the anonymous "Lady of the Dunes" or find her elusive killer.
