  Case Story
  Artrip's Latest Sighting
On October 5, 2007, cops say the town of Chattanooga, Tenn. discovered they had a surprise visitor -- escaped fugitive and bank robber Anthony Artrip. Police say Artrip was spotted driving a white Corvette by a local police officer, who took off in pursuit of him. The ever-resourceful Artrip crashed his car and made a run for it, disappearing into the nearby woods, according to police. Artrip's latest sighting came just a week after his last bank robbery in Calhoun, Ga., where cops say he made his latest unauthorized withdrawal. Agents say that Artrip seemed cool and collected when he approached the bank teller, saying that "everything's okay, don't worry," because the bank would have his image on surveillance video. The FBI reports that Artrip fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV. No one knows where Artrip will go next, but cops say it's clear Artrip's crime spree is far from over. Dramatic Escape From County Jail Cops say Artrip's long run from the law began on June 24, 2007, when the convicted bank robber made a bold escape from the Grant County Detention Center in Williamstown, Ky. According to police, Artrip scaled a basketball backboard in the gym's recreation area and climbed all the way up to the ceiling.  Worming his way through the ductwork, police say he made it out to the roof and leaped off. Jail officials then chased him into the woods nearby where Artrip promptly disappeared. Escapes are nothing new for Artrip, who had already busted out of one Kentucky jail and tried to make his way out of another, according to police.

  Cops: Artrip Banks On Michigan
Less than a week after his brash escape, police say Anthony Artrip surfaced in Princetown, WV, where he handed a bank teller a note that said, "Give me all the money or I'll start shooting." Cops say Artrip made off with a McDonald's bag full of cash, driving a vehicle that he later abandoned. Cops say that from there, Artrip made his way to Raleigh, N.C., where he robbed an area bank at gunpoint and cleaned out most of the tellers' drawers. Artrip was inactive for almost a month, but on August 4, cops say he was up to his old tricks again at a bank in Monroe, Mich. Carrying a dark bag, cops say he vaulted the bank counter and pulled out a handgun, which he used to threaten the nearest teller. Police say he took all the cash he could get his hands on and fled on foot. Instead of hitting the road, cops say Artrip actually intended to settle down. They say he rented a house in nearby Frenchtown Township, where he used the spoils of his crimes to furnish his new place and buy a TV. On August 27, cops say Artrip struck another local bank, and this time police were able to track him to where he'd been living. But before they could get their hands on him, authorities say he slipped out a window and disappeared in a stolen red truck, once again staying just slightly ahead of the law.

Artrip Turns Up In North Carolina
On September 10, 2007, U.S. Marshals said they gathered evidence that indicated Anthony Artrip might be in Asheville, N.C. Posters were distributed to the local police department so that they could warn area banks about his presence. U.S. Marshals say that on September 11, before Artrip even had a chance to strike, one officer got a look at the poster and realized that he'd seen Artrip the day before. The officer headed back to the part of town where Artrip had been and spotted him in a vehicle with a woman, according to authorities. Artrip fled the vehicle and ran into the nearby woods, Marshals say, and the officer lost track of him. Just three days later, Artrip had continued his streak of bank robberies, cops say. A man who looked like Artrip was caught on surveillance during a bank heist in Mt. Airy, N.C., and cops say that once again it was Anthony Artrip. Police say they don't know where or when he'll strike next, but cops are convinced Artrip won't be quiet for long.
