Case Story |

A Mother's Christmas Day Nightmare |
|
| |
December 25, 2006 started with the normal Christmas traditions for the Caldwell family in Greensboro, N.C. 17-year-old April Caldwell -- who lived away from home with her young son -- went to her parent's house to celebrate the hoilday. And even though he wasn't invited, April's ex-boyfriend and the boy's father, Juan Carlos Ramirez, showed up, too. April's family says Ramirez was acting strange, but everything seemed okay. The family even took holiday photos. But as April's mother, Anna, soon found out in the most devastating way -- appearances can be very deceiving.
April had broken up with Ramirez weeks before, but the arrangement apparently wasn't working for Ramirez. After April left her parent's house, police say Ramirez followed her to an apartment she shared with two men. Ramirez tried to talk to April, but left when April threatened to call police. April, worried about the way Ramirez was acting, called her mom. Anna started heading over to come to her daughter's aide, when Ramirez returned. |

A Phone Call To Mom Leads Her To Find Her Daughter's Body |

Ramirez asked April's two roommates to leave so he could talk to April alone. The men and April agreed, but only for a few minutes. The men say by the time they came back, a horrible scene was unfolding.
The men say Ramirez was stabbing April several times, and the enraged killer turned on them as they tried to help. Everyone ran outside the apartment, the men away from Ramirez, Ramirez after the men, and April staggering to the ground.
Just as her daughter fell to the ground, and April's two roommates returned, Anna came upon the frantic scene. She says she saw Ramirez driving off, then found her teenaged daughter lying in a pool of blood, a knife sticking out of her chest. |

A Horror Made Worse By Phone Calls |
|
| |
Ramirez was gone, but he didn't stay silent for long. April's family says a few days after the brutal killing of their beloved daughter and sister, her alleged killer started calling them. He would call sometimes once a week, sometimes several times a day, talking to April's mother, father, and sisters. They say he apologized for killing April, and described what happened that night, sometimes even breaking down into tears.
He told them he asked April to come back with him or let him take her back to her family's house. When she said no, he said that's when he got the knife. In one conversation recorded by the family on audiotape, he told April's half-sister "I got this knife and I hit her... ... I hit her in the stomach, in the back". He then expressed surprise when he heard that April was stabbed 17 times, saying he didn't hit her that many times.
The Caldwell family is worried Ramirez will try to get his boy back, and they've moved three times since Christmas.
Within a week of AMW airing April's story in July, police were closing in on Ramirez. Cops got a tip that Ramirez was in Union City, New Jersey, just over the bridge from Manhattan. An AMW producer went along with Greensboro Police detectives and members of the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force as they hunted for Ramirez. They found his hide-out, but missed him by just a few days.
Still, detectives found out valuable information from the men who let Ramirez stay at their apartment. They say he is a heavy smoker, smoking Marlboro or Marlboro Lights and lighting up every five minutes. He wears red and white sneakers and blue and white sneakers, and carries a red and white duffel bag. In the bag, the men saw a black, hard CD case with chrome on it, but they never saw what was inside.
The men say they met Ramirez at a bus station. He called himself "Miguel" and said he'd just gotten to New York from California. Feeling sorry for him, the men let him stay with them for at least a week, from July 15th to the 22nd. They said he was looking for work. They described him as quiet and reserved, and he said he had a daughter. He left one Sunday out of nowhere, and they have no idea why or where he went.
Detectives still think Ramirez could be in the New York City/New Jersey area. |
