A Different Kind Of Attacker |
|
| |
Police in Arlington County, Va., are determined to learn the identity of a strange kind of attacker stalking their streets and young women. Cops say this criminal has an unusual M.O. -- and a scary pattern that could indicate an escalation in violence.
According to police, a man has been attacking women in the north side of Arlington since March. Cops say the man targets women walking alone either very late at night, or in the early morning hours. But scariest of all is his odd method of attack. Cops say he takes a plastic bag and tries to force it over his victims' heads. So far, cops say all of his victims have been able to fight him off, but police believe he is a dangerous man capable of very violent crimes. |

Paper Or Plastic? |
|
| |
While police aren't sure why the unknown attacker uses plastic bags, they say it's possible he's trying to prevent his victims from seeing him, or using it to injure or abduct them. Whatever his motive, cops say the attacker's use of plastic bags on the streets is extremely rare.
At 9:45 p.m. on March 5, 2007, police say a woman was walking home alone when a man ran up to her and groped her before running away. According to police, this is the first suspected attack committed by their suspect -- even though he didn't use a plastic bag. Cops say the victim's description of the man matched the description from victims shortly after.
The next related took place on April 16, 2007 at 11:30 p.m., as a woman walked home alone. Police say the woman heard someone running up behind her, and before she knew it, a man was trying to put a plastic bag over her head. Cops say the man managed to get the bag partially over her head before she pushed him off of her and he fled.
Nearly a month later, around 2:40 a.m. on May 10, 2007, cops say the plastic bag attacker struck again, using the same M.O. Again, the man targeted a woman walking alone, tried to place a plastic bag over her head, and fled when the woman started to fight back.
Cops say the man's next attack, on May 28, 2007 at 2:27 a.m., followed the same M.O. But according to police, the plastic bag attacker stepped things up on June 7, 2007, changing his pattern slightly. Cops say around 1:20 a.m., a woman arrived home to her apartment off of Lee Highway. She had been walking alone.
Within minutes of walking inside, cops say she heard a knock on her door. When she answered, police say a man tried to force a plastic bag over her head -- but she fought him off and he fled. Cops say it is possible that the man had followed her home.
Police say they found a man in the area, who they interviewed about the crime and released without charging. They are calling him a person of interest in the case.
Cops have released a sketch of the man they believe is the Plastic Bag Attacker, and they hope that someone out there will recognize him. |
