Gas Station Murder Caught On Tape |
|
| |
From all appearances, it was a completely unprovoked attack.
Surveillance video taken at a Miami Gardens Citgo gas station January 20, 2007 shows people and cars coming and going. It's a busy Saturday night. And soon for several people, it's the night they'll witness a murder.
That night, 20-year-old Datrell Rawls made a quick stop at a cell phone store next to the gas station. As he got back into his car, police say surveillance video shows 21-year-old Jelmo "Skeebo" Kirkland run over to a friend, Murcury Morris Duncan, who was standing next to a pickup. The two have some sort of exchange, then investigators say Kirkland ran towards Rawls' car with a gun and opened fire as Rawls pulled away.

A Chuck E. Cheese Encounter |

Police say the video shows Kirkland then run away from the gas station. Rawls drove around the corner of the gas station, wounded and bleeding badly, in an apparent attempt to get to the police substation. He got out of his car and collapsed. He was declared dead at the hospital.
Datrell Rawls was just days away from beginning his freshman year in college when he happened to cross paths with Kirkland at a mutual friend's child's birthday party at a Chuck E. Cheese pizza place in Miami.
According to cops, Kirkland told someone at that party that he didn't like the way Datrell looked at him. Datrell and Kirkland apparently didn't know each other before they crossed paths at the Chuck E. Cheese party.
Cops say that two weeks later, on the night of January 20, 2007, Datrell stopped at a local gas station in Miami Gardens. As fate would have it, Jelmo Kirkland and another young man happened to show up at the same gas station. It was a warm night, and there were people filling up and milling about in the parking lot. Miami-Dade police say that as soon as Kirkland pulled into the gas station and got out of his vehicle, he spotted Datrell walking to his car.
Seconds later, cops say surveillance cameras captured Kirkland firing multiple rounds into Datrell's car as the young man tried to drive away. Datrell managed to drive to the nearest police station, where he died minutes later from gunshot wounds.
Datrell Rawls was his mother's only child. His mom, Day Rawls, is a former corrections officer who teaches criminal justice in the Miami public schools. She told AMW that Datrell was an industrious young man who worked at McDonald's to save money to buy his first car. At the time of his death, he was employed at Wal-Mart and was looking forward to starting college. The 20-year-old was also a magician.
Mrs. Rawls was devastated by her son's senseless murder, but she said was determined not to let his alleged killer get away with it.
Just two weeks after Datrell was gunned down, she wrote a letter to AMW asking for help with tracking down Jelmo Kirkland. |
