Bar Brawl Turns To Murder |
|
| |
Retired Air Force employee Enrique Bermudez, 72, was a regular at Colton, Calif.'s La Veranda Family restaurant. The father of four grown daughters and grandfather to 13 grandkids had befriended much of the staff at the eatery, and it was this camaraderie that police believe tragically led to his death on May 13, 2006.
Cops tell AMW that two brothers, Omar and Jonathan Ramirez, were drinking with family members at La Veranda that evening, and they were far from sober. Witnesses told police that the siblings were making insulting and sexist remarks at the waitresses, which annoyed Bermudez enough that he asked them to quiet down. Authorities say that words were exchanged which led to one of the brothers attacking Bermudez with a barstool.
Police say that Omar and Jonathan Ramirez savagely beat the 72-year-old man with chairs, stools, and their bare hands. During the attack, several patrons tried to intervene. Cops say that witnesses even ran out to the car where the brothers' mother and sister remained during the attack, however, neither family member would intervene. Furthermore, detectives maintain that the Ramirez brothers threatened the restaurant patrons to not call the police. |

Fugitives' Mom Played Role In Escape |
|
| |
Authorities believe that not only did Omar and Jonathan's mother, Maria Amaya, not respond to the murder of Bermudez, she helped her two sons escape after the incident. During the investigation, police learned that Amaya drove the pair to her home after the attack and she also cleaned the bloodied SUV to help cover their tracks.
Ultimately, Amaya pled guilty as an accessory to murder and was sentenced to time served and probation. Cops say that Amaya has not revealed where her son is now, but police suspect that Jonathan Ramirez may be hiding out in California, Texas, Illinois, or Mexico. Amaya recently sold her home in California and moved with the fugitive's sister to Texas.
Police are asking for the public's assistance in locating Omar and Jonathan Ramirez. |
