Orange County Bar Brawl Ends In Tragedy |
|
| |
On June 26, 2005, Tri Van Bui had been attending a wedding in Stanton, California and had decided to continue the celebration with some of the members of the wedding party. Police say that Bui and some friends ended up at the "All Stars" bar where they had anticipated enjoying the rest of their evening.
The party began to spiral downward when a minor, yet significant, altercation took place between a friend of Bui and some bar patrons. Police say Cuong Viet Nguyen was one of the men involved in the scuffle that began in the bar and continued outside after the bar had closed.
Investigators say that despite Bui being severely beaten, Cuong made the decision to further escalate the situation. He grabbed a .40 caliber handgun from his car. He shot Bui, wounding him several times in the upper torso. Police say an uninvolved bar patron was also struck by a stray bullet in the hand. Bui passed away a short time later and Cuong fled the scene of the crime.
Police say that Nguyen's burned car was found in Lodi, Calif., which is approximately 350 miles away from the crime scene. Authorities believed that Cuong may have been staying with family members or friends in Phoenix or somewhere in California. |
