Search Continues For Shooting Suspect |
|
| |
Cops in Oakland, Calif. are intensifying their search for a man suspected of shooting one of their own officers on May 19, 2007. It was just after midnight when police say that Officer Kevin McDonald pulled over a 1980 Camaro for running a stop sign in East Oakland.
Without warning, four shots rang out from the vehicle, striking McDonald once in his protective vest and again in his hand. Despite being injured, he was able to radio in the vehicle description and license plate number.
However, the trail soon when cold as authorities discovered the Camaro blocks away. Their suspect, Jesse William Mendez, had escaped on foot. The passenger in the car, Mendez's cousin 22-year-old Jeremiah Dye, was also no where to be found.
Officers in the area were able to conduct searches of local homes as well as cordoning off streets in the area, but there were no signs of Mendez. Dye was later found hiding underneath a nearby home in a crawl space. Detectives say that he refused to surrender to officers and was killed when it appeared that he was reaching for a gun.
The hunt continues in the Bay Area for Mendez who police say is a real threat to public safety citing the fact that if he tried to kill a police officer, there's no telling what he might do. Mendez is described as 26-years-old, Hispanic, 5'10", 180 lbs., with brown hair and hazel eyes. Mendez has prior felony convictions for selling narcotics and misdemeanor convictions for theft, forgery, and traffic violations. |
