  Case Story
Blood, Bullets, And A Constable Cap
Constable Robert Lee Bailey is a retired widower who's worked in law enoforcement for years.  But retirement hasn't kept him from serving his community.  In Lincolnville, S.C., outside of Charleston, Robert donated his time to assist the town's single police officer take care of things.  And that's what the devoted Christian was doing the Monday night he disappeared. Around 10:30 p.m. on May 14, 2007, police say Robert finished up a routine traffic stop.  Almost immediately afterwards, cops recieved several 911 calls reporting shots fired.  Lincolnville's only other police officer knew Robert had just finished a traffic stop, and phoned into dispatch to see if he was okay.  However, no one could reach Robert.  At approximately 11:00 p.m., an officer discovered Robert's constable cap, two handguns, and a large amount of blood on a street near the constable's last known location.  But Robert and his car were missing.  This would be the first of several bad signs.

  Car On Fire
Police put out the word that they were searching for constable Robert Lee Bailey, and authorities went on high alert. Around 11:40 p.m., police lost a read on Robert's radio.  At the same time, a South Carolina Highway Patrol officer spotted smoke in the distance as he drove down Interstate 26.  The officer tracked down its source, and discovered the constable's car in flames behind a church in Sangaree, S.C.  Once again, Robert was nowhere to be found -- and this wouldn't be the last piece of disturbing evidence.

  A Badge With No Officer
Police say on Wednesday, May 16, a group of kids in Harleyville, S.C. found a bundle of burned scraps of clothing.  Inside the bundle they found the constable's badge, gunbelt, handcuffs, and some other equipment.  Police stepped up their search, now focusing around Harleyville, S.C., which is about 45 miles northwest of Charleston.  Other than the chilling evidence, they have found no signs of Robert Lee Bailey. Police say they are looking for a black 1987 Chevy Caprice with distinct, 24' rims.  They believe that the vehicle and it's driver may know or have something to do with the missing constable.  Police also say they have impounded a white 1993 Chevy Caprice that may have been at the scene during Robert's disappearance. South Carolina police are holding several 'people of interest' in custody, but the case is far from closed.  And although things aren't looking good, police hope they can find constable Robert Lee Bailey soon.  Robert considered law enforcement his second family, and his family wants him back.
