  Case Story
  A Life Ended Too Soon
Manuel Gamboa, Jr. was just 24-years-old, and had dreams of one day being a police officer. But all that was ended on July 17, 2005, when Manuel was struck and killed by a bullet during broad daylight. He had been planning on heading to the beach that day, and was getting into a car in the 7100 block of South Lawndale. The bullet was one of many that came from a van that was driving past. The vehicle did not stop when Manuel was struck, but continued to drive on as if nothing had happened. Manuel was able to hold onto life for a day, but succumbed to his injuries on July 18, 2005.

  Many Questions Remain
Chicago police continued their investigation after Manuel's death, and were soon able to identify 22-year-old Sergio Mendoza as the alleged gunman. Unfortunately, Mendoza had already disappeared by the time police began to consider him a suspect. And with Mendoza still on the run, another question is left to be answered: why? Why did this shooting take place? Authorities say there is no chance Manuel was involved in a gang. So what could possibly have led up to this event, and resulted in the death of a promising young man? This is just one more question cops plan to ask Sergio Mendoza when they find him.
