  Case Story
A Battle Fought On Home Turf
When Jamel Bennett got a call from a friend, he always listened -- especially when it was a friend in trouble. Friends say Jamel, a native of the Newport News, Va. area, is outgoing and likeable. He's a family man, married with two children, who joined the Army because he wanted to serve his country. A few months earlier, he had returned to Virginia after a tour of duty in Iraq. But police say he survived a war zone halfway around the world only to face a dangerous gunman in his own hometown.

  A Friend In Need
On November 10, 2006, when a friend called to say that she needed help, Jamel listened -- it's not in his nature to say no. Jamel's friend told him that she'd been babysitting a 4-year-old boy when she was confronted by the child's father, Anthony Eason, and some of his relatives. Police say Eason and his family harassed the woman.  They ordered her to give them the little boy, according to cops, even though this wasn't Eason's regularly-scheduled visitation time. Frightened by the confrontation, Jamel's friend handed over the child. But police say she was worried about what had happened, so she asked Jamel to come over. Jamel has a closeknit group of friends, all of them military or ex-military. He rounded up four of them and headed over to the apartment where his friend had called from. When Jamel and his group arrived, police say they saw Anthony Eason and a friend in the apartment complex's parking lot. Jamel wanted to talk, and police say he and Eason had a heated conversation, though no voices were raised. Police say that without warning, Eason started shooting. Jamel's friend was hit twice, and Jamel ran. Cops say Eason chased him down and shot him in the back, then put four more bullets into him. Their work done, police say Eason and his accomplice jumped in a green Cadillac and took off.

  Jamel's New Fight
As for Jamel Bennett, he is lucky to be alive, but his recovery has been slow. Friends say he is undergoing therapy at a hospital in Richmond, and he is only five percent of what he was before the shooting. He can move his arms and one of his hands, but his legs are paralyzed. He currently can't walk or talk, but he can understand and respond when spoken to. Now police say they want to bring Anthony Eason to justice for ruining the life of a brave and dedicated soldier.
