Tragedy Strikes On Christmas Eve |
|
| |
On December 24, 2001, Young E. Lee and her 9-year-old son, Thomas, left their home in East Brunswick, NJ on their way to church. Young wanted to get there early to help with preparations for a Christmas Eve celebration.
Twenty-three-year-old Rizwan Chaudhary had just finished his shift at a nearby Taco Bell. He was leaving work with several employees and a friend who'd arrived earlier.
Police say one of the group invited Chaudhary and the others to their home. Chaudhary and his friend climbed into Chaudhary's vehicle, a red 1998 Dodge Intrepid, and headed off.
Once they were behind the wheel, Chaudhary and his co-workers began to race each other, police say, ignoring the posted 50 mph speed limit -- and blowing through a red light.
Cops say Young and her son Thomas were cruising along in their minivan, unaware of Chaudhary and his friends. She stopped before turning onto Ryders Lane, a four-lane road, and didn't see any traffic -- so she kept going.
But police say the vehicle driven by Rizwan Chaudhary was already hurtling toward her. |

A Deadly Impact |
|

Police say that Chaudhary saw the Lee's minivan and stomped on the brakes, but it was too late. According to authorities, the tires locked and the car skidded for more than 20 feet, shooting like a bullet towards the minivan, and then -- impact.
Chaudhary's Dodge struck the minivan at 91 miles an hour, police say, smashing into the left side of the vehicle and sending it flying across the road.
When witnesses found the van, Thomas Lee was lying upside down and had stopped breathing. The first officers on the scene attempted to revive him, but Thomas was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. It was 7:45pm, just fifteen minutes after the start of the Christmas Eve service his mother had planned to attend.
As for Rizwan Chaudhary, police say that when they tried to arrest him for vechicular homicide, he was gone. Now he's raced his way onto their most wanted list, but they're hoping that justice will catch up to him soon. |
