  Case Story
  Man Killed By Brother-In-Law
On September 30, 2000, authorities tell AMW that Roberto Rios Huerta shot and killed his brother-in law, Ricardo Campos, at a family gathering.  Police say that Campos' two daughters and son were also present at the time of the crime.  Huerta was angry at the victim's daughters and was confronting them in an agressive manner.  Campos intervened and was shot in the process.  Police believe the victim prevented one or both of his daughters from being killed. Detectives say that Huerta fled the crime scene and headed towards Mexcio or Central America.  A murder warrant was issued for the suspect's arrest and was also issued in Mexico under international treaty.  Roberto remains at large after eluding arrest in both countries.  Detectives say that Huerta returned to California and was last seen at a relative's home in San Gabriel in 2004.  They say he is believed to be living and working in the United States under an assumed identity. Police say Huerta is 5'6" tall, 165 pounds, and wears his brown hair short.  He also has a tattoo of a scorpion on his right arm. Authorities consider Huerta to be armed and dangerous.

Routine Traffic Stop Identifies A Killer
Just after midnight on April 30, 2006, cops pulled over a suspicious driver near Motel Drive in Fresno, Calif. The driver told cops his name was David Luna but he had no identification to prove it. Police became suspicious and took the extra step of transporting the driver to the station to check him out. The driver was photographed, fingerprinted and cited for driving without a license. Cops could not find an active warrant under the name David Luna, so he was released. Around 2:00 a.m., authorities say the driver was seen driving away from the Frenso Police Department in a cab. Sixteen months later, detectives from Ontario, Calif., made a startling discovery after running the fingerprints of Roberto Rios Huerta. Huerta is still wanted for the 2000 murder of his brother-in-law, Ricardo Campos. The search came back matching Huerta's prints with the same driver cops detained in Fresno. Further analysis and distinct physical characteristics matches confirmed for cops that Roberto Rios Huerta was indeed the man they detained in Fresno in 2006.

  Huerta Arrested In Mexico
On August 15, 2006, cops say that Roberto Rios Huerta was arrested by authorities in Mexico.   Because of a provision in Article 4 of the Mexican Federal Penal Code, which says crimes committed by a Mexican citizen against another Mexican citizen in a foreign country can be prosecuted in Mexico, Huerta was tried and sentenced in Mexico to thirty years in prison.  Cops say that because Huerta fled the U.S. as a fugitive, he may be dealing with harsher consequences than if he had chosen to stay.  In Huerta's trial, he was convicted and sentenced with no witnesses.  The judge reviewed the evidence and made the decision.
