Fugitive William Greer's Naked, Drunken Confession |
|
| |
On Dec. 22, 2006 police in Cleveland, Texas made an unusual arrest. A man was wandering naked in a field, visibly intoxicated. As the officers were interviewing the man, 41-year-old William Greer, he said he had done some cocaine -- and confessed to accidentally shooting and killing his live-in girlfriend. Since the cops didn't have anything to prove what they were being told, they released Greer the next day.
But a week later, investigators in the Harris County Sheriff's Office heard gruesome testimony from Greer's 9- and 13-year-old children.
According to cops, on December 19, 2006, the kids, who lived with Greer and his girlfriend -- Tammy Myers Esquivel -- heard the two adults arguing violently between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Cops say the kids also heard a gunshot, followed by Tammy gurgling and Greer asking her if she was dead or alive.
The next morning, the kids left for school but didn't see Tammy. That same day, their mother picked them up to spend the holidays with her. The kids kept what happened to themselves.
But on December 30, 2006, the day they returned home, they told their mother everything.
When cops went to Greer's house and searched the bedroom, they didn't see Tammy. However, they found clear evidence of a shooting, blood, and a roll of clear wrap, indicating a body had been removed.
After Greer was arrested in Cleveland, Texas, cops believe he went to see a relative in Houston. Police say he told his relative that he had messed up his life and that he was heading to Georgia to see his brother.
Once in Georgia, cops say Greer told his brother that he had shot Tammy by accident, but that he buried her body so nobody would find her. He also said that he was going to go to Canada and start a new life there. Cops say Greer's brother dropped him at a truck stop, and Greer disappeared.
But it wouldn't be for long -- cops came to AMW for help, and with all the tips the show has generated, authorities have been hot on Greer's trail ever since.
Greer Chased From The Bayou
On July 14, 2007, the America's Most Wanted hotline was buzzing, and Detective Craig Clopton was there fielding the calls. As the night progressed, a trend became clear: call after call came in saying exactly the same thing. The tips all claimed that William Greer had fled from Houston, and was now working and living down on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
A number of the tips mentioned the QuarterMaster Deli, right in the heart of the French Quarter. It didn't take long for Clopton to spring into action. By July 18, Clopton hit the Big Easy with America's Most Wanted cameras in tow to follow up on the information.
William Greer was long gone, but Clopton did come up with enough information to confirm that the person everyone called about from the deli was, in fact, William Greer. In talking to co-workers and friends' of Greer -- who was using the alias Billy Maxwell -- Detective Clopton found a picture that confirmed his suspicions. It was yet another sighting of the man who seems to be just steps ahead of law enforcement. |

Full Of The Holy Spirit, Or Just Full Of It? |

Fresh from tracking down sightings in New Orleans, investigators suspected Greer would continue his trek east. That's why they were excited when a series of tips placing Greer in Georgetown, Ky. rolled in to the AMW hotline a few weeks later.
All the information placed Greer as a parishioner at Victory Tabernacle Pentecostal Church. In fact, they say he'd even been baptized there. But a lot of people, including the church's pastor, had doubts about just how devout the man known as Billy Leslie was. There had been a few run-ins with the church, and a number of people were talking about the mysterious man who'd shown up out of nowhere.
When Greer appeared on America's Most Wanted again, the tips placing him in Georgetown had a familiar ring to them. Just like in New Orleans, Greer had found a place to live on Bourbon Street. Yes, there is a Bourbon Street in Georgetown.
With an exact address to check out, Scott County deputies set up surveillance at the location and when they finally went in, Greer was gone. But they did uncover enough information to be sure Greer was there.
Most notably, once again, Greer left his trademark --a white cowboy hat -- as well as a photograph of himself getting baptized at the church. |

Sleeping With The Enemy |
|
| |
When 43-year-old Kelly Richardson met a man going by the name William Renekar at a bar in Newport, Ky. back in December 2007, she thought she had found a perfect match. William -- "Billy" as she called him -- seemed very polite, loving, well-mannered and respectful. He was everything a woman could hope for.
The relationship evolved quickly -- so quickly that "Billy" moved in with Kelly at the house she shared with her 18-year-old daughter and her 25-year-old son, Matt.
But Matt was not very happy about the whirlwind romance. He had first met Billy at the same bar where Kelly met him, where Matt worked as a waiter. Matt said Billy looked like an opportunist, and was known to have a really bad temper after drinking a few bottles of Bud Light.
So when Matt saw his mom bringing Billy to the house, he had to let them know what he thought about the relationship. Matt confronted Billy, but the relationship continued.
But it would take Kelly herself to unmask the real "Billy." She stumbled across an ID that didn't belong to him. When she confronted "Billy" about it, he said he was using that ID to find work because he was wanted for tax evasion.
The revelation caught Kelly off guard, and still suspicious, she left for work not knowing what to do. But things would take care of themselves on January 12, 2008, when AMW showed "Billy's" mug shot on America's Most Wanted.
AMW.com Unmasks Accused Killer
It was 9:30 p.m., and Matt was at home playing video games. But his game was interrupted by a loud thump coming from the other room. When Matt went to find out what it was, he realized "Billy" was gone.
Matt called his mom and told her about it, and when she came back to the house, she noticed that not only "Billy" had vanished, some money she was saving in a little box was gone too.
The idea of "Billy" just taking off without saying anything haunted Kelly for a few days, until she decided to get to the bottom of it. That's when she went to AMW.com and searched all our fugitives, one picture at a time, until she found one that looked like her "Billy" -- next to the name William Greer.
But it wasn't until she saw the picture of his missing right index toe that she realized she had been "sleeping with the enemy." Her "Billy" was really an accused killer, wanted by authorities in Houston, Texas. She saw that he was featured on AMW that very same night -- just minutes before he disappeared into the night.
Could Documents Get Us Closer To Greer?
Recently, Kelly Richardson was surprised when she found a cache of documents hidden under her television: a driver's license and birth certificate that William Greer was using while he was living in Northern Kentucky.
We learned that the papers belong to a dead man named Randall H. Renaker. AMW producers worked to learn the document's rightful owners, and Randall's widow, Tina Renaker Hinkel contacted AMW, and agreed to talk to us about the case.
Tina says she knew William Greer as Billy Maxwell, so we went to her home in Newport, Ky. to return her precious documents -- and while we were there, we learned some brand new clues to help you track down the real William Greer.
Traits And Habits May Help Catch A Fugitive
Tina says Greer is a violent sleeper -- he hits, kicks, and fights in his sleep, and sometimes shouts out random phrases. Tina recalls one time he even kicked her out of the bed onto the floor in the middle of the night. Tina also says Greer constantly picks at his finger tips, and that he may be trying to get rid of his fingerprints. We learned Greer is still very religious, reads the Bible daily, and still sleeps with his socks on.
Remember, he's missing his right index toe.
Both Tina and Kelly agree that Greer is a ladies man, and he is extremely nice to women.
"Greer has a 50-gallon ego," Tina says.
Kelly says Greer is a clean freak, and we heard from others that his personality changes dramatically after he drinks alcohol.
Cops say Greer has a cocaine addiction, chain smokes, and drinks a lot of alcohol.
Police say he loves working out and staying in good shape. According to police, Greer has a big ego and likes to show off his skills with a Nunchaku.
Cops say he also brags about having a lot of money at one time. Authorities say that he has a confident walk and may be seeking work in the construction industry.
In fact, investigators say he found a construction job in Newport, Ky., and his boss said he was a great worker who learned quickly.
Cops say he may be trying to get around by train, and has stated that he can go without food for a long period of time. Greer apparently has learned that he can be easily spotted with his cowboy hat, so he may no longer be wearing it. Instead, he may be wearing a baseball cap.
Police say his disguises can't cover up who he really is.
