"View of Auvers-sur-Oise" In The Hands Of A Professional |
|
| |
On the eve of the new millennium, a masked professional broke into the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England and stole Cezanne's famous landscape painting "View of Auvers-sur-Oise."
The unknown burglar entered the museum via a hole he cut into the roof, then descended into the room where the painting hung, set off a smoke canister, and used a fan to spread the smoke so as to blur the security cameras.
In a matter of ten minutes, the thief seized the painting, climbed up a ladder, and exited the way he came in. He left behind a holdall that contained gloves, a scalpel, and tape, and investigators say that the tactics the burglar used proves that he is a professional who knew exactly what he was doing. In an attempt to keep the painting from going abroad, customs and immigration staffs have been on the look-out ever since.
