"Nativity" Painting's Location Still Unknown |
|
| |
Nearly half-century ago, Caravaggio's famous painting, Nativity With San Lorenzo and San Francesco, disappeared. On the night of October 16, 1969, two unknown culprits entered the Oratory of San Lorenzo in Palermo, Italy and removed the large -- 105 inches by 78 inches -- painting from its frame where it hung above the church's altar since its creation in 1609. For over three hundred years, the Oratory's congregation marveled at the portrait that showed the birth of the Christ-child in a Bethlehem stable. Details of that night are sketchy, but it has long been theorized that the Sicilian Mafia is responsible for the theft. The FBI has been investigating the theft for many years and has placed the crime on its Top Ten Art Crimes list, and says that the painting's value now stands at $20 million. |
