  Case Story
  Smoldering Fire Conceals Crime
On January 7, 2007, neighbors noticed thick black smoke coming out of 87-year-old Bennie Angelo's Canton, Ohio home.  Concerned for the elderly resident's welfare, Bennie's neighbors called the authorities.  But, by the time they arrived on the scene, it was too late for firefighters to save him. Bennie's body was transferred to the hospital in Canton and doctors there made a startlng discovery.  Bennie didn't die from smoke inhalation or severe burns.  Instead, Bennie had been killed, the result of multiple gun shot wounds that he received following a brutal beating.  Police say the fire, which was started in another room, was set to cover the tracks of Bennie's killer or killers.

Did Bennie Know The Person or Persons Who Did This?
Police say they have an idea of what happened to Bennie leading up to the shooting, but they have no idea who did it.  At the scene, investigators found a couple of things that explained the events leading up to Bennie's murder. There was no sign of forced entry into the charred home.  Cops think Bennie probably knew the person who came to his front door.  Then, that person or another person with them, forced their way past Bennie. At some point, Bennie suffered a brutal beating.  Investigators think Bennie was beaten for money and other valuables in his safe. Police say that Bennie's safe was empty and left open.  Bennie's children say he never left the safe open and they knew he had previously kept cash inside of it. Bennie Angelo reported another burglary to police just two weeks prior to his death on Christmas Day 2006.  Bennie told cops that he had a stack of cash in a drawer in his bedroom and a jar of quarters worth about $500.  Both disappeared sometime between December 20th and the 25th.  Bennie told cops he had no idea who took the money or how they got in to his bedroom.

  Decorated Veteran Survived Pearl Harbor
Bennie Angelo lived a full 87 years.  He was a decorated World War II veteran who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor.  Bennie was an active participant in area Veterans' groups and was even named the 2006 Veteran of the Year in Akron-Canton. Bennie's four children are left wondering how a brave man can survive one of the worst events in American history, only to fall prey to such a brutal and unnatural death.  Investigators hope someone out there knows something and they come forward quickly so everyone can find justice for Bennie.
