Devlin To Plead Guilty |
|
| |
On October 8, 2007, Michael Devlin pled guilty to two charges stemming from the abduction of 13-year-old Ben Ownby. Devlin pled guilty to kidnapping and armed-criminal action. According to one of his attorneys, Develin wanted to spare his family, as well as Shawn Hornbeck and Ben Ownby the anguish of going through a difficult trial. Following his plea, Judge Stanley Williams sentenced Devlin to life in prison.
Prior to the plea, in a prepared statement, the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation released the following statement:
On behalf of Shawn, his parents Craig and Pam Akers, and their family, we are cautiously elated at the news that the defendent intends to plead guilty to the crimes he committed against Shawn and Ben.
When this occurs, we will officially end this nightmarish chapter in our lives and begin a new, fresh chapter that we have waited to begin for five long years.
We would like to thank everyone for their hard work, their prayers, and their well-wishes. Our gratitude is immeasurable.
On April 17, Washington County Prosecutor, John Rupp, filed charges against Devlin accusing the 41-year-old of attempted murder, kidnapping, armed criminal action, three counts of forcible sodomy, and one count of attempted forcible sodomy. Since Devlin's arrest in January, St. Louis County prosecutors had already added more than 70 charges against Devlin including 69 initial counts of forcible sodomy, and 2 counts of child kidnapping. He had been charged with kidnapping 13 year old Ben Ownby in January and Shawn Hornbeck, then 11, in 2002. The boys were safely recovered on January 12, 2007, and police arrested Michael Devlin shortly thereafter. |

Missing Boys Found, Missouri Man Charged With Kidnapping |
|
| |
Police in Beaufort, Mo. began the search for missing 13-year-old William "Ben" Ownby on a Monday, January 8, 2007. Ben's parents described him as a straight -"A" student and a Boy Scout with a passion for books and computer games. He disappeared on his way home from school, and all police knew was that a schoolmate had seen him pulled into a compact white pickup truck.
For the next few days, searchers scoured the area around his home for some sign of the missing teenager, but found nothing. Police said the truck -- described as a Nissan or Chevrolet with a camper shell -- was the best clue they had.
Then officers spotted the truck in Kirkwood, Mo. at the home of Michael Devlin. Inside Devlin's apartment, police say they found William "Ben" Ownby and another abducted child, Shawn Hornbeck. Hornbeck had been kidnapped almost five years earlier.
Devlin was first charged with kidnapping in the first degree for the abduction of Ben Ownby. When asked how he wanted to plead at his January 18 arraignment, Devlin quietly said, "I'm not guilty." After the hearing, Franklin County prosecutor Robert Parks told reporters that Devlin had admitted to police that he kidnapped Ben Ownby.
Devlin was then charged with kidnapping and armed criminal action in Shawn Hornbeck's abduction. He didn't appear at his January 31 arraignment in Washington County -- his lawyers entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.
Police are now looking at similarities between the kidnappings of Ben and Shawn, and the abduction of Charles Arlin Henderson in 1991. Henderson was taken while riding his bike in Moscow Mills when he was 11 years old. He's never been found. |
